HAL LEONARD
Danses for Harp and String Orchestra (for Chamber Orchestra Set of Str New

Model: 51483442

Debussy wrote these two short dances to a commission from the instrument-making firm of Pleyel, which was keen to use famous names in the marketing of its newly-developed chromatic harp. The dances are also playable without problem on the pedal harp, which was to replace the chromatic harp on the concert platform. The archaic style of the pieces, including modal harmonies, used to express a “sacred” rite and a “profane” dance of joy, points to the enthusiasm for antiquity of Debussy himself and of the artistic world around 1900.

Ours is the first critical edition of the pieces, and is based on careful checking of the autograph and first edition. Owing to the moderate level of difficulty of the orchestral parts, the work is also suitable for amateur ensembles. The harp part is available with the piano reduction in HN 1584.

Carving an Alphabet: A Book of Madrigals for Five Cellos Full Score New

Model: 02033984

Direct transcriptions on Renaissance madrigals has been part of the SAKURA cello quintet's (for whom this work was commissioned) core repertoire every since they were created. “Carving an Alphabet” was composed with the expressivity, virtuosity and hyper-extended range for which SAKURA is known. The emotional landscape (lovelorn, passionate, miserable, nature-loving, awestruck, etc.) of the late-16th/ early-17th century madrigal composers and their favorite poets is also reflected here. The composer adapted fragments of poetry from two of his favorite poets, Michael Ondaatje and Czeslaw Milsz, which is used as titles and scenarios for this collection of madrigals-without-voices. Songs: I. Carving an Alphabet, II. A Flute from the Throat of a Loon, III. Somersualts (in Protospace), IV. The Night and its Forces, V. Bells of the Sea, VI. Country of Warm Rains, VII. Solitude Is Not an Absolute, VIII. Painting the Variegated World, IX. By Sunrise or the Rising of the Moon, X. The Honey Gatherers, XI. Arcs of the Heart, and XII. Carving an Alphabet II. “Carving an Alphabet” is designed to be performed as a complete book of madrigals in the order presented above; or, selections in any order can be chosen to fit the needs of a given concert program.

Hungarian Rhapsody No. 10 (Piano Solo) New

Model: 51481664

The Hungarian Rhapsody no. 10, published in 1853, is based on a composition by Béni Egressy. At that time, the Hungarian national composer directed one of the most famous so-called gypsy bands. When Liszt toured Hungary in the spring of 1846, Egressy wrote a piece to welcome him to Pest. Liszt expressed his gratitude by performing it there several times – albeit, as reported in the press, “in his very own way”. This was probably the start of Liszt's fundamental reworking from which the Hungarian Rhapsody no. 10 emerged over several intermediate stages, as always in the very finest “style hongrois”: A simple rhythmic motif becomes the starting point for a magnificent intensification with interspersed recitatives and cadenzas up to the highly virtuoso stringendo finale. For this Urtext edition, which takes into account the surviving autograph for the first time, it was again possible to recruit two outstanding Liszt specialists: Mária Eckhardt for the preface and Vincenzo Maltempo for the fingerings.

Dante's Journey: A Concerto for Orchesrta Full Score New

Model: 02086164

DANTE'S JOURNEY employs the Romantic idea of literature inspiring music, casting the three books of Dante's The Divine Comedy (I. Inferno, II. Purgatorio, and III. Paradiso) into the traditional three-movement concerto. The story follows a person's journey to the depths of hell, the climb up through purgatory, and finally to the exaltation and peace of heaven. Since all three movements describe different locations, each movement uses a different musical universe to describe these contrasting places while showing off the entire orchestra and its different sections and combinations.

Instrumentation: 2+1(Picc).2+1(EH).2+1(BCl).2+1(CBsn): 4.3.3.1: Timp.Perc(3): Hp.Pno/Clst: Str
