This edition completes Henle's series of all three clarinet concertos by the Swedish composer and clarinetist Bernhard Henrik Crusell. Issued in Leipzig in 1811, it was his first published work but had definitely been composed several years prior to this. With its elegant head movement and the simple and moving Adagio, it is probably the most “Mozartian” of all of his three concertos, although the final rondo is reminiscent of Carl Maria von Weber. The editor and clarinetist Nicolai Pfeffer is now presenting this charming work, between Classicism and Romanticism, on the basis of the first edition. The piano reduction wonderfully fits the hands and was prepared by Johannes Umbreit on the basis of the original orchestral parts.

Following their edition of the Grand Concerto in F minor Op. 5 (51481209), Henle expands their series of Crusell's clarinet concertos to include the one in B-flat major Op. 11. The Swedish composer was himself a prominent clarinet virtuoso and the concertos were tailor-made for himself so to speak. Despite being technically very demanding, the Concerto in B-flat major avoids being overly virtuosic and wins us over with its melodic ingenuity. It is a very welcome addition to Henle's early Romantic repertoire for the clarinet. The clarinetist Nicolai Pfeffer edited the edition in an exemplary manner, consulting the sole surviving source, the first edition of 1829. Johannes Umbreit was responsible for the study score, which wonderfully fits the hands.

Initially composed in 1907 for bass voice and piano, Habanera by Maurice Ravel was transcribed for Bb clarinet and piano for this edition. Based on a Cuban Contradanza, it features a special habanera rhythm and is generally performed with sung lyrics. In this edition, the clarinet is a substitute for the voice. Composed by Gabriel Grovlez, Lamento et Tarentelle is a piece for clarinet and piano. Initially written for the Paris Conservatoire contest in 1923, it is dedicated to a professor of the Conservatoire, Prosper Mimart. Quite difficult (6, 7), this work is perfect for the transition between the upper intermediate level and advanced. Lamento et Tarentelle is divided into four sections: 1. Lento ma non troppo 2. Vivo (Movement of Tarentelle) 3. A tempo 4. Piú Vivo. This really melodious piece requires the mastering of breathing technique among other specificities. Gabriel Grovlez (1879-1944) is a renowned composer and conductor. He studied at the same time as Gabriel Fauré and composed numerous pieces for voice and some chamber music.

Eight years after he had composed his first two Clarinet Sonatas op. 49, Reger confessed in a letter to a friend that he was once again committing “a new crime against harmony and counterpoint.” He was referring to the Sonata for Clarinet and Pianoforte op. 107. Reger made a point of not destroying the chamber music character of the work by having too much virtuosic padding – “Brahms developed classic examples of what the style was meant to be like.” Alongside the sonatas, the Urtext edition also contains two charming “encores”: a Tarantella in g minor and an Album Lead in E flat major. The Sonata op. 49.2 is for clarinet in A. The other pieces are for clarinet in B flat.

This version of the famous piece Le Petit Negre by Claude Debussy is a version transcribed for Bb clarinet and piano by Auguste Périer, a professor at the Paris Conservatoire. First published in 1909, the piece, in C major, starts Allegro giustoand is an energetic cakewalk with an introduction followed by the main theme, which is repeated before the piece comes to a close. This really charming work would suit an upper-intermediate level or above and is perfect to start working on Debussy's music.
