Sculpture (Orchestra Score) New
Model: 48025421

Composed in 2005 to commission by the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Serge Koussevitzky Foundation in the Library of Congress, in memory of Serge and Natalie Koussevitzky. The world première took place at Walt Disney Concert Hall, Los Angeles. The 23-minute score is dedicated to Frank Gehry, architect of Disney Hall, and Lindbergs music explores the sonic spaces of the then new concert venue. As well as deploying antiphonal brass in the final section, the work as a whole reconfigures the orchestra from the bass register upwards, eliminating violins altogether. The Los Angeles Times elaborated: “The result is a lot of low instruments – pairs of contrabassoons, pairs of tubas and Wagner tubas, pairs of pianos and harps mellowing out the whoops for joy. The violas are the highest strings... Disney Hall is especially happy with bass notes, and Lindberg gave it its fill. In the middle, Sculpture turns into a miniature concerto for orchestra, focusing on different instrumental sections competing to be the most dazzling. At the end the organ came rumbling in, lingering 'Zarathustra'-like in its low register. Tubas and other brass instruments took positions around the hall... The piece climaxes with rousing Stravinskyan rhythms... The orchestral writing is that of a master.”

HAL LEONARD
Graffiti HPS 1682 (for Chorus and Orchestra Study Score) New
Model: 48025427

Composed in 2008-09, GRAFFITI is Lindberg's first work for chorus and orchestra, and it earned him the 2009 Finnish Composer Society's Award. The libretto for the half-hour work is compiled from ancient Latin graffiti discovered during excavations of Pompeii, the city destroyed by volcanic eruption in 79 CE. Some of the writings are specific to the time and place, such as publicity for gladiatorial combats, but many of the political denunciations, silly aphorisms, and sexual encounters either documented or solicited could, with the Roman names changed, be found in present-day settings. Lindberg assembled the brief texts without aiming to create a narrative or thematic scheme, his intention being to evoke 'a grand choral and orchestral fresco of the life of the town'. A work of great energy and originality, and a significant addition to the repertoire of large-scale choral writing.

Vier Letzte Lieder (Four Last Songs) (for Soprano, Violin, Horn in F o New
Model: 48025428

This arrangement expands the repertoire for horn trio and in particular provides a companion work to Brahms's Horn Trio in E flat major, Op. 40. Sopranos will find it an inviting addition to their recital repertoire, and the inclusion of an alternative part for cello in place of horn extends the work's availability to piano trios. The available versions of Strauss's Four Last Songs hitherto comprise the original, for soprano and orchestra, and the reduction for soprano and piano by Max Wolff. For this new arrangement, the use of the violin and horn seemed natural, not least with respect to the soloistic nature of the principal parts in the orchestral score. This combination allows the arrangement to be faithful to the depth and complexity of the original whilst emphasising the intimacy afforded by chamber music

The Confession of Isobel Gowdie, HPS 1800: New Corrected Edition Study New
Model: 48025429

New, corrected edition of MacMillan's breakthrough work, a sensation at the 1990 BBC Proms. The work is now firmly established in the contemporary orchestral repertoire worldwide and championed by leading conductors.

Isobel Gowdie, from Nairn, Scotland, was publically executed in 1662 amid scenes of hysterical fright and sadism, one of 4,500 who perished during the Scottish Reformation because their contemporaries thought they were witches. The composer remarks, “Initially I was drawn by the dramatic and programmatic potential of this insane and terrible story but the work soon developed a far more emotional core as I attempted to draw together various strands in a single, complicated act of contrition. On behalf of the Scottish people the work craves absolution and offers Isobel Gowdie the mercy and humanity that was denied her in the last days of her life. To do this I have tried to capture the soul of Scotland in music, and the outer sections contain a multitude of chants, songs and litanies (real and imagined) coming together in a reflective outpouring – a prayer for the murdered woman. This work is the Requiem that Isobel Gowdie never had.”

HAL LEONARD
Ariel (for Basset Clarinet, Violin, Cello, and Piano Score) New
Model: 48025434

Ariel is scored for basset clarinet, violin, cello and piano, and is a response to the poem of the same name by Sylvia Plath. Simpson reacted to the poem musically, jotting down the ideas for instrumental combinations, as well as the emotional content as he read the words. The piece begins, ('Stasis in darkness...') and gradually wakens up to a furious outburst in all the instruments. Scales descend to the depths of the instruments ranges, out of which a slow, winding duet for basset clarinet and cello leads to the centre of the work – a slow, calm three-chord chorale. The work then comes to a stand-still where short outbursts are gradually transformed into new, faster material. The three-chord chorale motif then goes through a number of permutations until a recap of theopening's outburst is quickly side-lined by a boldly expressive return of the chorale motif. This piece is about extremes – extremesof expression, of instrumental textures and capabilities.

Disappointed that he could not succeed with his musical ambitions in the metropolis of London, the English composer Edward Elgar retreated to the provinces. In the summer of 1888, his fiancée Caroline Alice Roberts surprised him with a self-written poem, Love's Grace. Elgar returned the favor with a love note for piano. Offered to the music publisher Schott, the gem was to become Edward Elgar's first published work in 1889. However, the breakthrough would only come with the Frenchized title Salut d'amour. The miniature has now become a classic hit and is also likely to enchant in the piano trio version.

Jazz Sonata (Cello and Piano) New

This cello sonata by the renowned jazz pianist and professor of jazz piano unites in a certain way “the best of two worlds”: melodies, sophisticated harmonies and rousing rhythms, which are also convincing in a pure jazz context, are fused here with a formal language and movement techniques that are oriented towards classical models. The voices of both instruments are interwoven on an equal footing and take the listener on an exciting musical journey from the very first moment, which finds its virtuoso climax in the lively rondo via a classical sonata main movement and a quiet middle movement.

Ten Pieces from the Series For Children (Score and Parts) New
Model: 50510098

Leó Weiner (1885-1960) was recognized both as a composer and a teacher of chamber music. World-famous Hungarian musicians and stringquartets pointed to him as their legendary maestro. His transcriptions for string orchestra of ten pieces from Bartók's cycle For Children are a masterpiece from a genuine musician: in it, besides simply providing study pieces for young orchestras, he also, and far more importantly, introduces learners of string instruments to the unique, incomparable musical world that Bartók's pieces for children inhabit.

This volume, previously available in the Leggiero series, is now, in a new guise, part of the series Treasury for String Ensembles.

Serenade in C Major Op. 48 (for String Orchestra Viola Part) New
Model: 51481553

Tchaikovsky spent the summer and autumn of 1880 at his sister's country estate in Kam'ianka, Ukraine, where he sought peace and relaxation. But after a short time the desire to work took hold of him again. “I'm sketching a symphony or string quintet just now; I don't know where it's going yet,” he wrote to his friend and patroness Nadezhda von Meck. In the end it turned out to be a Serenade for String Orchestra, which numbers among his most beautiful inspirations and is today a central work in the genre. The four movements captivate with their diverse moods – be it the Mozartian first movement “in the form of a sonatina”, the elegant Waltz, the melancholy “Elegia” or the rousing Finale. For this new source-critical edition it was possible to consult the autograph in Moscow as well as the early printed editions into which Tchaikovsky sometimes entered a number of minor revisions. Serenade in E Major, Op. 22 (for String Orchestra Full Score) New
Model: 51483300

The serenade flourished in Mozart's era, but with Brahms the genre experienced a new surge in popularity in the 19th century. Dvorák's cheerful and relaxed op. 22 came into being in 1875, during a very happy time for him both professionally and privately. Heput his personal stamp on the five-movement composition by incorporating stylized Slavonic dances. The spirited finale captivates by restating themes from the previous movements. Since its premiere in 1876 the work, with its melodic richness and particular harmonic modulations, has enjoyed great acclaim from audiences and critics alike. Today it is among Dvorák's most popular and most frequently performed compositions. As well as the autograph and printed editions, the composer's copy of the printed score with autograph corrections and additions has been consulted for Henle's Urtext edition.

Serenade In E Minor Op. 20 (for String Orchestra Violin 2 Part) New
Model: 51483314

Elgar's Serenade for Strings was composed in 1892 and represents the first of his works with which the 35-year-old composer was truly satisfied. Whether, as often claimed, it derives from three pieces for strings from 1888 can no longer be ascertained, since only the titles of those pieces “Spring Song”, “Elegy” and “Finale”, have come down to us. However, these titles would also characterise the movements of the Serenade surprisingly well. Posterity shares Elgar's positive assessment to the present day: the Serenade op. 20 is not only one of his most popular compositions, but is among the most frequently played works in the string-orchestra literature. Edited by British Elgar specialist Rupert Marshall-Luck, this classic now appears in Henle Urtext as conducting score, performance material and handy study edition.
