Symphony II - Lost Songs takes its title from Benson's fundamental interest in lyricism, evident in most of his works regardless of the complexity of language in which they were cast. When the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) scheduled a broadcast of the tape of the European première given by the Larvik (Norway) Blaseensemble under Odd Terje Lysebo at the World Association of Symphonic Bands and Ensembles at Skien, Norway, July 1983, they wrote Benson regarding programmatic implications in the title. Benson responded as follows: “The title does not have any specific programmatic meaning. It is a lengthy, serious work which reveals my commitment to simplicity of melodic and harmonic elements, the use of an inclusive musical language (tonal, atonal, serial, freely organized), and my interest in resetting ebb and flow, rise to audibility and fade back, the intrusion sometimes of old material, the persistence of some elements, all of which tend to blur the clarity of formal sections, the exclusivity of content or style in sections usually found in earlier music. Formally then, my music is not very tidy in an 'old style' sense, rather more complicated and multi-layered as real-life experience seems to be. The character of the work, the lyrical quality overall, reflect the title. I really felt it that way. That is all. Some have called its character tragic. Essentially, I agree with this description though I'd not be more precise than that. It's more of a sense of things after almost fifty years of experience with bands ? of time, people, and deep feelings - there's a power and fragility in memories, an almost reverent weight of time and a quiet luminous buoyancy of spirit, rooted and delicate, even serene, together. It's in the music, not these words.”
