This work for Tuba and Hand Drum was commissioned by Harvey Phillips in memory of William Bell. Beginning with a note to the tubist from the composer to “By all means feel free, but rhythmically strong. No 'normal' sounds required,” the work opens with the “free” introduction by the tuba requesting singing, buzzing, valve flutters, finger snaps, percussive effects on the tuba, etc., before the hand drum joins in a 4/4 meter that lasts until the end, with the tuba part utilizing a more even mixture of “normal” sounds with te various effects.
