Written for clarinetist Wonkak Kim, Dancing Light is a spiritually uplifting composition animated by the instrumental color of the clarinet, dialogue between the soloist and orchestra, and rhythmic energy. The inspiration for the piece springs from the syncopated, improvisatory aura of jazz and world music with imagery suggesting shimmering light over water. Tonal/modal gestures are juxtaposed with those employing the diminished (half-step/whole-step) scale, with the syncopated rhythm generating the underlying pulse of the various sections. At times, a melodic line is doubled at the interval of the 7th or 9th creating a sonic “halo” aroundthe primary melody.
