Study Score. Co-commissioned by Carnegie Hall, and the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival in celebration of their 50th Anniversary. Composed for eight instruments. The Swedish spelling of the word semaphore is a reference to the late Finnish artist Ernst Mether-Borgström, whose first language was Swedish. His work has been well-known to me since my childhood, and I grew up with his paintings. He also created several versions of playful and colorful sculptures which he called Semafor, since he thought of them as traffic signs in our urban jungle. In his mind, he considered that art should surround us everywhere as a messenger of spiritual values in our life. Who wouldn't agree?

The reason for the composition of this work is well-known: Bach's encounter with Frederick the Great and the story of the 'royal theme' which the King of Prussia 'deigned to play' on a pianoforte and which Bach 'was to execute in a fugue'. The sequence of the individual movements of the composition, however, has been uncertain up to now. After an extensive theoretical examination of this problem in his book 'Johann Sebastian Bachs Musicalisches Opfer', the editor now presents his results in the form of a sheet music edition. Score also available (item 49018743). Instrumentation (1 each): Violin I, Violin II, Viola, Violoncello I, Violoncello II, Double Bass, Organ, Transverse Flute, Oboe. MORE»

The DETTINGEN TE DEUM in D Major, HWV 283 (also TE DEUM FOR THE VICTORY AT THE BATTLE OF DETTINGEN) is George Frideric Handel's (1685-1759) final setting of the Te Deum hymn, written in 1743, only a month after the battle. The work, along with THE KING SHALL REJOICE, resulted from a commission to celebrate a day of public thanksgiving upon the return of the commanders, King George II and Lord Stair, following their victory over the French. The final chorus, “Oh Lord, in Thee have I trusted,” is introduced by the trumpets, followed by an alto solo before the entire chorus and orchestra close the work in magnificent power and harmony. Choral part available separately for sale from the publisher.
