Not only being the first supporter of his son Richard and one of the best hornists of his time, the Bavarian court musician Franz Strauss also liked to compose from time to time. The compositions for horn thus created were meant to be performed by himself at concerts and social gatherings.
Whether as cheerful 'Oberbayerische Gebirgsweise' or merrily galloping 'Rondino à Chasse', Strauss's settings for horn quartet published in this edition for the first time combine the joy of playing with the splendour of 19th-century light music.

When Beethoven visited the director of music at the cathedral in Linz, Franz Xaver Glöggl, in autumn 1812, the latter asked his guest to “compose so-called Equali for four trombones for All Souls' Day (2 November).” Beethoven readily complied – and it was to be his own funeral music. For in 1827, the Equali were sung in an arrangement for male choir as a “dirge for Beethoven's fungera; procession.” The original instrumental version is today a core work in the trombonist's repertoire. Our urtext edition is based on the musical text in the Beethoven Complete Edition and contains a score and single parts (both in the original C and in modern bass clef.)

Commissioned by Zipang (a professional trombone quartet in Japan), Tokyo Triptych is a work in three movements, each of which is named for a district of Tokyo.
SHINJUKU - An extended and energetic fanfare named after this spectacular area in Tokyo that houses some of Japan's most beautiful and modernistic skyscrapers, as well as the city's busiest railway station.
SENGAKUJI - In turn reflective and passionate, this movement is named after a small temple in Shinagawa district. It is one of Edo's most famous and romanticized landmarks, and marks the grave of 47 “ronin” (samurai) whose death is considered a prime example of “bushido” (the warrior code).
SHIBUYA - This fast and energetic finale is named for Tokyo's newest shopping district, a favorite haunt of young and old alike as well as being famous for its varied nightlife. MORE»
