Note from the composer: Little Lucas is dedicated to my 2 year-old son. It is a happy medium swinger that captures his mischievous nature with the deceptively difficult movement of major 7th chords in the A sections. The melody notes are, for the most part, the 7th of each chord and these notes follow a diminished scale sequence--going up a half-step and then down a major third repetitively. The B section features a 2 five sequence that moves in major thirds. Originally, I wrote this tune for a quartet date. For this arrangement I added a line played by the bass and piano at the end of each A section and voiced out the horns in open drop 2 voicings for a clear and cheery sound.

From the CD Groove Shop recorded by the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra, here is John Clayton's stylish take on this masterful Billy Strayhorn composition. The rhythm section sets up the feel followed by a sax soli chorus, and finally the main theme stated by tenor and muted trumpet. Sprinkled with a few twists and turns, ample solo space, and terrific ensemble writing throughout, this is a real gem of a chart.

Mike kind of ignored the “lazy” part of this river and has turned it into more of a raging whitewater monster. Look for some unusual twists in this high-powered chart including an original bebop line for small group, a brief “stride” piano section and some wild ensemble writing.

Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra – Grade 5
Opening with a crash from the band and an extended drum solo, the melody creeps in quasi-Art Blakey style. Small group statements are offset with full ensemble shouts, and half-time sections are contrasted with an uptempo groove. This is from the recording “Heart and Soul” by the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra. Must have been some “little old lady”!
