Clifton Williams' final legacy for band, Songs of Heritage, was outlined in score form upon his demise in 1976. Conceived as a tribute to the composers and musicians among our forebears, the composition is indigenous of the fife and drum corps, the cakewalk, the shuffle dance, and the ballads of Stephen Foster. In a contemporary band idiom, it also reflects the present day trends in America's musical life.

Using melodic fragments from each of the six movements of Percy Grainger's Lincolnshire Posy as foils for each other, Steven Bryant has created a unique and brash experiment in musical juxtaposition! Grainger described his work as a bouquet of musical “wildflowers,” and Bryant describes “ImPercynations” as a “genetically-altered, crossbred, hybrid offspring...a musical Franken-flower”. From the composer: “Nature's Way for intermediate level band was commissioned by BandQuest, a project initiated by the American Composers Forum. Their mission is for major composers of national reputation to write works of high quality that take into consideration the (still comparatively limited) levels of musical development--both technical and conceptual--typical of such ensembles. I eagerly accepted the commission and the challenges implied thereby--that is, to reign in my creative imagination to some extent and limit the technical/conceptual demands to a more moderate level than is to be found in my previous compositions for band. Nonetheless, since the process of rehearsing, studying and performing a work created specifically for the school student market is--and must be, in my view--primarily educational, it was very clear to me that my work would (and should) challenge the players at least to their top levels, and even a little beyond that. Thus Nature's Way in no way represents a compromise of my personal style, nor my long held concepts of form, continuity, texture, and instrumentation. I have known for a long time that young, inquisitive minds are eager to learn from new experiences, from previously never encountered challenges, that is to say, to be pushed--gently--to rise above their present levels of achievement. That's what education is all about.”
BandQuest®, an exciting series of new music and accompanying curricula for band, is a program published by the American Composers Forum. The series was started as a response to feedback from music educators that there is a pressing need for new, fresh band music. The heart of this program is new works written by a diverse group of leading American composers who have created challenging pieces that are a true departure from standard middle school repertoire. Every BandQuest project includes a residency component in which the composer works collaboratively with a middle school as they create their new piece. Many BandQuest pieces are accompanied by an interdisciplinary curriculum designed to assist students as they learn the music and to integrate each piece with non-music studies. Visit www.bandquest.org to learn more about this innovative series, and email bandquest@composersforum.org to request a free downloadable audio catalog.

The result of a collaborative commission by the U.S. Air Force Academy Band, the U.S. Coast Guard Band, the U.S. Military Academy Band and the U.S. Naval Academy Band, this major work for band takes its title from a quote attributed to Thomas Jefferson, “Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty,” and a variation of the West Point motto, “The Long Gray Line.” Opening with a tribute to those who have gone before in service to our country, a solemn, noble theme is presented that reappears near the end of the composition. The main body of the work is a series of march-like themes and idiomatic fragments culminating in a glorious full-band fanfare. Following a restatement of the “noble” theme, a stirring coda brings the music to a climactic close. Dur: 8:30 (Grade 5) (E.B. Marks)

Right from the beginning, this dynamic overture explodes with intensity and rhythmic drive. Commissioned by District 8 of the Michigan State Band and Orchestra Association, John Moss uses angular melodies and biting ensemble punctuations to provide grit and character to this tour de force for wind band. For contrast, a slow middle section features rich harmonies and sonorous melodies before a reprise of the opening dynamic themes. Throughout the work an active percussion score supports and augments the overall dramatic effect. Dur: 6:15

This poignant and moving work musically tells the tale of a chorus of angels (chorus angelorum) as they accompany two souls to the next world. The term “passage” can variously describe a “passageway” of travel, a musical phrase, or perhaps the soul's moving on from this world to the next. In this work for band, dark and rich sonorities are contrasted with a lilting, Celtic-flavored melody as it alternates with striking “passages” from the brass. Later, an alto sax soloist adds a haunting quality to the mood followed by a return of the ethnic drumming heard earlier. This unique and rewarding composition is beautifully paced and skillfully orchestrated using every section of the band. Dur: 7:00 (Grade 4)
