The Celestial Banquet, by Olivier Messiaen is one of his earliest compositions. Written for organ, this piece lasts 7 minutes because of its slow tempo that gives it a timeless feeling. This piece is quite challenging and would require an advanced technical level. Written in Octatonic mode, The Celestial Banquet used a theme that was transposed twice for less monotony. Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992) was a French organist and composer who was also passionate about ornithology. Inspired by Japanese music, he had a very special way of composing and his work can be identified by its complexity, its diatonic aspect, its harmony with limited transposition, its color and its additive rhythms. He composed many works related to ornithology and birdsong, including the 'Bird Catalogue' in 7 volumes and the 'Treatise on rhythm, color and ornithology' in 7 volumes.

Marcel Lanquetuit (1894-1985) studied at the Paris Conservatoire before becoming the organist at the church of Saint-Godard in Rouen. As well as being a prominent organist of his time, Lanquetuit was a renowned composer, but chose to improvise rather than write. A few of his notated compositions remain, however, including the grand and mighty Toccata in D Major, published in 1927. Toccata in D Major is typical of the French style and is dedicated to Lanquetuit's first teacher, Albert Dupré. The incessant, staccato chords and memorable melody create a toccata for organ like no other, making for an essential addition to the advanced organist's repertoire.

Max Reger, the creator of forbiddingly difficult organ music, could also take a different tack. Jehan Alain (1911-1940) was a French organist and composer. The third volume of Alain's Organ Works comprise Prélude Profane and Lamento, as well as other favourites from the composer. The Ascension was originally composed for orchestra by Messiaen in 1932-1933. Messiaen arranged The Ascension for solo organ a year later. The first, second and fourth movements are arrangements of the orchestral version, however, the composer created a new third movement; Outburst of joy from a soul before the Glory of Christ, which is its own glory. This version of Cortege and Litanie by Marcel Dupré was written for organ. For upper intermediate players, this 8 page composition is written with 4 sharps and includes the use of the pedals. The piece, initially written for a small orchestra in 1922, was created for a play. Dupré integrated it into one of his piano recitals and was later asked to arrange it for other instruments. These scores therefore exist also arranged for piano, orchestra (in 4 and 16) and for the conductor. In terms of composition, the piece is divided into two: “Cortege,” which title describes a solemn procession, begins in E major and lasts twice as long as the introductory theme; and “Litanie,” which is describing the prayer sung during a procession and which follows the “Cortege” part to then be joined by it. Marcel Dupré is a French composer and virtuoso organist who won the Prix de Rome in 1914. He became famous when he played the work of Bach in its totality from memory in 1920. He later became the professor of many renowned students at the Paris Conservatoire such as Messiaen, Langlais and Cochereau among others.

Liszt composed this virtuoso work for the dedication of the refurbished organ in Merseburg Cathedral. The manuscript was, however, only completed after the inaugural concert and the first edition was published in Holland around 1859. Today, the work is mainly played in the second version of 1872, which Liszt made at the suggestion of his pupil A.W. Gottschalg. The latter persuaded the composer to somewhat simplify the technical demands, which reflected the intentions of the older Liszt. This Henle Urtext edition comprises the 1872 version; in addition, the appendix contains an ossia version of measures 130-166. The changes between the first and second versions are discussed in the preface.
