Performed by Keith Dwyer, clarinet
Accompaniment: Stuttgart Festival Orchestra
Conductor: Emil Kahn
No composer likes to write music without feeling that an artist exists both capable of, and willing to, play it to good advantage. When Carl Maria von Weber met Heinrich Joseph Baermann, one of the greatest clarinetists of the early nineteenth century, he delightedly began writing all sorts of work for him, including several chamber pieces and the two famous clarinet concerti. In his F-minor Concerto No. 1, it is clear that Weber knew the virtuosity of his player-he makes the soloist range over the entire compass of his instrument, and such quiet moments as do occur are invariably surrounded by runs, leaps and passagework of the utmost brilliance. A fantastic concerto. Also in this edition is Carl Stamitz's lovely B-flat-major concerto, a most beautiful Classical-era work. Includes a printed solo part for B-flat clarinet and access to online audio featuring a complete version with soloist, in digitally remastered stereo; then a second version of the orchestral accompaniment, minus the soloist.

Along with Robert Schumann's identically titled op. 73, the Fantasiestüke of 1864 by the Danish composer Niels Wilhelm Gade are an essential part of the repertoire of all clarinettists. Gade lived in Leipzig for a long time and had been among Schumann's close friends. With this deeply romantic composition, he made an important contribution to establishing the clarinet as a chamber-music soloist. The four pieces in this collection can of course be performed separately, and are ideal teaching material. Our editor, the clarinettist Nicolai Pfeffer, has drawn upon the German and Danish first editions and the autograph in Copenhagen as sources, and consequently has been able to eliminate several discrepancies found in older editions.

Written for virtuoso clarinetist Heinrich Baermann, Concertino would become the first work of an impressive oeuvre for clarinet, one which along with that of Mozart, Spohr, and Brahms constitutes the backbone of the repertoire. Internationally-recognized clarinetist Charles Neidich unites for the first time Weber's original text with the edition published by Baermann's son, which had formed the basis of most subsequent editions. Also presented are examples from Cyrille Rose's 1879 edition which was the foundation of the French tradition and which held much more closely to Weber's original. This new critical edition inspires those learning the piece to develop their own personal, yet informed interpretation of Weber's premiere clarinet masterpiece.

The Clarinet Concerto in C minor of 1809 is the very first work by Louis Spohr to grace Henle's catalog. The first in a series of four concertos written by Spohr for the virtuoso Johann Simon Hermstedt has lost nothing of its romantic magic and belongs to the standard repertoire of every clarinettist. Besides taking a close look at the Leipzig first edition of 1812, this edition reassesses Spohr's autograph score for the first time: after it was rediscovered, it was possible to do away with many imprecisions and irregularities found in earlier editions. Christoph Sobanski's new piano reduction wonderfully fits the hands.

This suite of songs and dances was commissioned by the piano/clarinet duet of Luca Ferrini and Joze Kotar. The suite is in three movements and each movement is either inspired by, or an arrangement of songs and dances from the Caribbean islands of Martinique and Trinidad and Tobago. The first, Biguine is a typical Martiniquan dance built on a simple verse chorus structure and without doubt, the result of the fusion of African and European cultures over centuries. The dance is historically associated with the town of Saint - Pierre (birthplace of my own maternal grandfather) and the form has evolved from the beginning of the 20th century to encompass satirical themes, politics, love, and the carnival. The clarinet is the main instrument of the Biguine, a name whose origins are highly contested although the most widespread belief is that it comes from the English verb, “to begin.”
The second movement is an arrangement of a quadrille song, You know one Joseph Keeba from a field recording in the village of Toco, in Trinidad. In 1939 an American couple, Melville and Frances Herskovits, both scholars, undertook a series of field study recordings in villages across Trinidad and Tobago as part of their life-long study of West African and African American societies. The Herskovits were among the first scholars to paint accurate accounts of African culture in North America, The Caribbean and South America and thanks to their recordings, traditional songs that have long disappeared from practise can still be found and serve as inspiration for generations to come. The words of the song make fun of the cuckold husband.
The third movement, Time for Man Go Home is an arrangement of a work song from a collection of Trinidad Folk songs by the eminent Trinidadian musicologist Edric Connor. In this song, built on a call and response, I have combined the solo melody with the chorus response to give the sense of a long working day coming to its end at dusk and the workers calling out that it is time for man go home. Mr. Connor's note in the collection remarks that this is the only song calling to stop work that he knows.

Performed by Tim Laughlin, clarinet
Accompaniment: Tim Laughlin's New Orleans All-Stars.
Many people consider New Orleans the birthplace of jazz. After all Louis Armstrong was born and played there, as well as Joseph “King” Oliver, the Dodds Brothers, Sidney Bechet and a roster of players to fill not one but many all-star bands. Louis Prima was a “child of the Crescent City” as is Harry Connick and Wynton Marsalis. The whole Marsalis clan was raised there, and are all acknowledged jazz masters, so its reputation as the seminal jazz town has long been acknowledged.
We assembled a band of New Orleans' best players for our times, veterans all of many street parades and steamboat gigs, and asked them to put together a typical program of New Orleans Classics. Under the direction of Tim Laughlin, clarinetist supreme, and led by Connie Jones, Jr., one of the great hornmen of this city which boasts so many great players, they put together an album of must-hear, must-have songs that every traditional jazz player cherishes. Hear them now in these perfect renditions. Then join the band on your own instrument, be it clarinet, trumpet, trombone, tenor, piano, bass or drums as they swing through the French Quarter of New Orleans. Includes newly engraved solo charts and recordings of complete versions of each tune, plus a recording of the accompaniments minus the soloist.

Duo Concertante, Op. 351 by Darius Milhaud was composed in 1956 for the Paris Conservatoire Contest. Many influences can be recognised in this piece: from the Provence where he was born, to jazz and other melodies of South America. Lasting approximately 7 minutes, Duo Concertante, Op. 351 is started by a fanfare with a strong energy reminiscent of the South of France, followed by a simple and moderate clarinet partly joined by piano chords. The initial theme is then repeated one last time for the finale. Darius Milhaud (1892-1974) was a French modernist composer and a teacher. He was also part of the Les Six and was strongly influenced by Jazz. His opus list ended at 443.
