Taking inspiration from Jascha Heifetz' masterful transcription of George Gershwin's wonderfully original Three Preludes, Charles Neidich has created a work that functions as a real duet between the clarinet and piano. Rather than simply transpose the Heifetz violin part, Neidich adapted the work to fit the clarinet, taking what works well and changing other parts, often returning to Gershwin's original to fit the character of the clarinet. In February 1909, Debussy was elected a member of the Conseil Superieur of the Paris Conservatoire and, in this capacity, was called on to serve on the jury at internal competitions. He was invited to write two test pieces for the 1910 clarinet contest; one for the interpretation class, the other for the sight reading test. The Premiere Rhapsodie was composed during December 1909 and January 1910, concurrently with work on the first book of Preludes for piano.

We encourage you, the soloist, to invent counter-melodies rather than mere harmony parts. This is a music of loose weaving parts, not one of precision ensemble figures. Along with Robert Schumann's identically titled op. 73, the Fantasiestüke of 1864 by the Danish composer Niels Wilhelm Gade are an essential part of the repertoire of all clarinettists. Gade lived in Leipzig for a long time and had been among Schumann's close friends. With this deeply romantic composition, he made an important contribution to establishing the clarinet as a chamber-music soloist. The four pieces in this collection can of course be performed separately, and are ideal teaching material. Our editor, the clarinettist Nicolai Pfeffer, has drawn upon the German and Danish first editions and the autograph in Copenhagen as sources, and consequently has been able to eliminate several discrepancies found in older editions.

Jean Françaix (1912-1997) was a French composer and pianist known for his joyful, expressive music. He gained early recognition, studying under Nadia Boulanger and Maurice Ravel, and quickly became a successful composer. Françaix composed over 200 works, including chamber music and film scores, but his music saw less performance after the 1970s due to his rejection of serialism. This Tema con Variazioni (1974) was written for a clarinet exam at the Paris Conservatoire. Composed for the A clarinet at Ulysse Delécluse's request, it features six variations and a cadenza based on the main theme. The piece, dedicated to Françaix's grandson Olivier, reflects a playful, mischievous child, showcasing Françaix's characteristic style. Introduction and performing notes in French and English by the clarinetist Rémi Lerner. New engraving.
