French harpist and composer, Henriette Renié (1875-1956) lived in poverty for much of her life. However, this did not stop her from composing significant works for the harp, including Legend of the Elves inspired the poem of the same name by French poet, Leconte de Lisle. Despite being a talented composer, Renié lived at a time where fame and success was socially unacceptable for women. In 1903, she composed her substantial work for harp, Legend of the Elves. As a highly virtuosic work, this Renié piece displays use of cadenza passages, exploitation of tonality, complex rhythms and variety in performance directions. For advanced harpists, Renié's Legend of the Elves is an exciting and varied addition to the repertoire.

La Source opus 44, by Alphonse Hasselmans (1845-1912) was composed in 1898 for Hélène Gayat who, before she became the dedicatee of this work, regularly performed the composers earlier pieces. The entire work is a clear illustration of the composers attitude, with its exclusive use of four-finger arpeggios in each hand and the decision to place the melodic line in the thumbs. The idiomatic writing of the piece contributes to the impression of fluidity that radiates from it and echoes its aquatic title. Introduction in French and English by Constance Luzzati.

For intermediate players, Guitare, Op. 50 is a melodious piece by Alphonse Hasselmans. Composed ideally for pedal harps, this piece includes some pedal changes and some accidental alterations. Three sections can be differentiated: Allegro Moderato (3/8), Pas trop retenu (3/4) and Tempo 1 (3/8). The last part is a variation of the theme played in the Allegro Moderato section. Perfect for a recital, this piece for harp is really enjoyable to play and to listen to. Alphonse Hasselmans (1845-1912) is a Belgian-born French harpist, a great composer and renowned professor. He has composed and transcribed numerous works for the harp. He also edited and reviewed a collection of works by Bochsa. His most famous piece is a concert piece called The Wellspring, Op. 44.

Written by Marcel Tournier, Fairyland – Prelude and Dance is a piece for harp dedicated to Alphonse Hasselmans and to be played on the pedal harps. This piece would fit the skills and abilities of advanced harp players and the technical difficulties encountered are numerous: hand-crossings, numerous arpeggios, natural harmonies, many accidental alterations as well as some pedal changes. Marcel Tournier (1879-1951) was a French harpist and teacher. He studied with Alphonse Hasselmans at the Paris Conservatoire and composed numerous pieces for solo harp: Russian Lullabies, Six Christmas, Four Preludes and Three images, Suite 1, Op. 29 among many others.
