A spectacular finding concerning Mozart occured in the autumn of 2014 when a hitherto totally unknown manuscript by Mozart's own hand was discovered in Budapest. It is the larger part of the autograph of one of Mozart's most well-known piano sonatas – the Piano Sonata in A major which begins with the moving Siciliano theme and contains the everlasting “Turkish March” as its last movement.
Everyone is familiar with this piano work – and yet no one has yet known it entirely. It's only now that the definitive Urtext of important parts of this masterwork was able to be published. The deviations from the score of the sonata as generally used up until today can be regarded as grave differences. They are described in the edition. The detailed critical commentary is available free-of-charge for download on www.henle.de.

In autumn 2024, the Morgan Library in New York announced a sensation: in a legacy, curator Robinson McClellan had discovered a postcard-sized manuscript of a waltz in a minor with the inscription “Chopin”. Chopin experts all over the world have meanwhile scrutinized and confirmed the authenticity of the manuscript: undoubtedly an autograph by the Polish composer, it is moreover the short waltz of a hitherto unknown original work. Scholars and pianists have since then fallen into a waltz fever! In close collaboration with the Morgan Library, G. Henle Publishers has the privilege to present the first Urtext edition of the new Chopin waltz: in addition to the musical text edited by Jeffrey Kallberg, it also offers a facsimile of the autograph. In his epilogue, the internationally renowned Chopin researcher provides fascinating observations concerning the genesis and intention of the small composition. We were able to engage star pianist Lang Lang, who introduced this sensational discovery to the world with his premiere recording, to supply the fingerings. A gem for all Chopin fans and piano aficionados!

Tender is the night on what is, perhaps, Keith Jarrett's most intimate album. It is comprised of solo piano renderings of jazz ballads and folk songs, played with unmistakable affection. Jarrett dispenses with the jazz soloist's conventional emphasis on dexterity, the 'clever' phrase, the virtuosic sleight-of-hand. Instead he strips these songs to their melodic essence and, gently, lays bare their emotional core.
This transcription, which has Keith Jarrett's personal approval, was worked out at the keyboard and aims, above all, for maximum playability within the greatest tonal range. Friedrich Grossnick, as an experienced pedagogue, has produced an outstanding score with particular sensitivity to Jarrett's interpretation thus enabling its faithful recreation on the piano.

Schubert's 22 piano sonatas sketch a most illuminating picture of the prematurely departed composer and of his compositonal path. From the first attempts of the gifted 16- to 19-year-old musician one can trace a continuous development leading to the five great sonatas which he wrote in the years 1823 and 1826, and finally to the three masterworks written shortly before his death, which place him on a level with Beethoven as a composer of sonatas. Volume II of the three-book Henle Urtext edition contains not only the G Major Sonata D 894 op. 78, with its glorious piano writing full of delicate expressiveness, but also the three great sonata masterpieces in C minor, A Major and B flat Major, with which Schubert looks far into the future and which have long since taken their place in the classical canon of piano sonata literature.

According to Ravel himself, the strange title of the little piano piece composed in 1899, “Pavane for a dead princess,” should not be ascribed too much importance. He chose it mainly because he liked the alliteration it contained. At the same time he did, however, agree that the music evokes “a pavane that a little princess once might have danced at the Spanish court.” Following its premiere in 1902 the simple but effective piece gained unparalleled popularity, not least reflected in the numerous arrangements made of it, one of which, for small orchestra, was by Ravel himself. Henle publishes the work in its original version.

These piano studies, fully worked out in summer 1848, but presumably sketched earlier, were published in the German original editionat the beginning of 1849 simply with the numbering 1-3. In the first French edition published at the end of that year, they were given the new title “Trois Caprices poétiques” - possibly at the publisher's request - and also received the characteristic individual titles “Il lamento”, “La leggierezz”- and “Un sospiro”, which have remained for these pieces that are still popular today. In comparison with the early studies, in which the purely technical performing aspect is to the fore, the idea of poetic sound is at the heart of these compositions, which were clearly written for concert performance. For this revised version, several newly-discovered or newly-available sources were available, including the autograph which served as the engravers copy.

With Frédéric Chopin's Fantaisie-Impromptu in C sharp minor, G. Henle Verlag presents a further Urtext separate issue from among the most popular works of this central composer of romantic piano music. This ear-worm is “romantic” in the best sense: stormy, iridescent cascades produced by refined rhythms surround the hymn-like melody of the middle section. It is hardly surprising that Chopin fans easily end up rhapsodizing! What is surprising, however, is that the piece, still so popular today, is untitled in the source materials, and was not published until after the composer's death. Moreover, there exist two versions; we print them both in our individual Urtext edition, which makes it easier to compare them with one another.

55 internationally celebrated pianists were invited to adopt one Haydn piano sonata each and provide it with their personal fingerings – a “who's who” on the contemporary piano scene. G. Henle Publishers now presents this classic, revised and with a new look, to all pianists in the certainty that Haydn's sonatas will further cement their place in the world of music. Volume III offers the crowning achievement of Haydn's sonata-writing with these late works, including famous works such as the stormy Sonata in E minor Hob. XVI:34 and the “grand” Sonata in E-flat Major Hob. XVI:52. Superbly laid-out settings for the piano are combined here with great musical expressivity, which is why these sonatas remain firmly anchored in concert life to this day.

The Perfect Music Series for Piano Students and for Those Returning to the Piano.
Each volume in the “At the Piano” series includes original pieces by one composer. The works are arranged in progressive order of difficulty and complement one another conceptually. Each piece ranges from one to eight pages. All volumes contain fingering and practical tips on technique and interpretation. The “At the Piano” series is an ideal introduction to the world of classical piano music and is particularly suitable for piano students and for all those who are returning to the piano after a long break. The series is edited by Sylvia Hewig-Tröscher, a piano professor at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Munich. She has decades of experience teaching young people and adults, gives concerts and masterclasses around the world, and is a much sought-after educator.
This volume opens with especially easy minuets written by Mozart when he was just eight years old. A successful mix of well-known and unusual pieces leads the player all the way to the profound Fantasy in D minor. A special feature here is the C-major study, which has not been available in any Henle edition until now. Selected individual movements from Mozart's piano sonatas show the stylistic and emotional breadth and subtlety of his music, and offer manifold opportunities to practise and overcome specific technical challenges.

Next to the polonaises and the waltzes, the mazurkas are the third dance form which Chopin cultivated in his music. They constitute the largest of these three groups, boasting nearly 60 pieces. Chopin made use of the mazurka genre from his childhood until the last years of his life. They testify not only to Chopin's love for his native Poland, but also to the depth of the composer's feeling for the mentality of his people. He took inspiration from the various types of mazurka found in different regions of Poland, but sublimated them into absolute music of the greatest elegance, refined harmonies and rhythmic power.

George Frideric Handel's powerful musical personality reveals itself not only in the large forms of opera, oratorio, and orchestra suite, but also in his compositions for keyboard. The focus here is on eight Suites of his first printed collection from 1720, which by no means comprise standardized sequences of dance movements. On the contrary – free-form movements of great artistic weight predominate, inserting themselves between lighter dance pieces. Handel's suites always display a distinctive individuality, and deserve a larger presence in our concert halls. We were able to engage Handel specialist Anthony Hicks as the editor of this Urtext edition.

Henle Publishers now presents this classic, revised and with a new look, to all pianists in the certainty that Haydn's sonatas will further cement their place in the world of music. Volume I contains Haydn's early sonatas, very much still born of the spirit of the early Classical period: catchy music, fun to play, often at a moderate level of difficulty, without which modern piano instruction would be nearly unthinkable. Time and again, the authenticity of individual sonatas from this group has been questioned – the preface by Armin Raab, the Scholarly Director of the Joseph Haydn Institute, now provides comprehensive information on new findings regarding this important topic area.

This cycle of six piano pieces was composed in 1896, just four years after Rachmaninov had completed his studies at the Moscow Conservatory, and it already shows signs of the mature master he would become. Deeply expressive and complex in texture, the six pieces clearly point towards Rachmaninov's later large cycles such as the Préludes and the Études-Tableaux. For this edition Henle has been able to consult the autographs held by the Glinka Museum in Moscow, which have enabled them to correct numerous mistakes and inaccuracies that had found their way into the first edition. As a bonus, it offers an appendix with the late version of the second “Moment musical” in e-flat minor that Rachmaninov published in the USA in 1940. Henle has been able to recruit no less a figure than Marc-André Hamelin to undertake the fingerings here.
