In autumn 2024, the Morgan Library in New York announced a sensation: in a legacy, curator Robinson McClellan had discovered a postcard-sized manuscript of a waltz in a minor with the inscription “Chopin”. Chopin experts all over the world have meanwhile scrutinized and confirmed the authenticity of the manuscript: undoubtedly an autograph by the Polish composer, it is moreover the short waltz of a hitherto unknown original work. Scholars and pianists have since then fallen into a waltz fever! In close collaboration with the Morgan Library, G. Henle Publishers has the privilege to present the first Urtext edition of the new Chopin waltz: in addition to the musical text edited by Jeffrey Kallberg, it also offers a facsimile of the autograph. In his epilogue, the internationally renowned Chopin researcher provides fascinating observations concerning the genesis and intention of the small composition. We were able to engage star pianist Lang Lang, who introduced this sensational discovery to the world with his premiere recording, to supply the fingerings. A gem for all Chopin fans and piano aficionados!

The definitive edition (1987) of the piano teaching classic. Includes an introduction by the composer's son Peter Bartók. (English/Spanish/Japanese/Portuguese text). In 1945 Bela Bartók described Mikrokosmos as a cycle of 153 pieces for piano written for “didactic” purposes, seeing them as a series of pieces in many different styles, representing a small world, or as the “world of the little ones, the children”. Stylistically Mikrokosmos reflects the influence of folk music on Bartok's life and the rhythms and harmonies employed create music that is as modern today as when the cycle was written. The 153 pieces making up Mikrokosmos are divided into six volumes arranged according to technical and musical difficulty. Major teaching points highlighted in Mikrokosmos 2: Staccato, legato; Accompaniment in broken triads; Accents
Volume 1 contains Nos. 1-36

Each volume in the “At the Piano” series includes original pieces by one composer. The works are arranged in progressive order of difficulty and complement one another conceptually. Each piece ranges from one to eight pages. All volumes contain fingering and practical tips on technique and interpretation. The “At the Piano” series is an ideal introduction to the world of classical piano music and is particularly suitable for piano students and for all those who are returning to the piano after a long break. The series is edited by Sylvia Hewig-Tröscher, a piano professor at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Munich. She has decades of experience teaching young people and adults, gives concerts and masterclasses around the world, and is a much sought-after educator.
Although Frédéric Chopin was one of the greatest piano virtuosos of his time, even pianists of moderate technical ability can enter into his Romantic, magical realm. His mastery was such that his own, unmistakeable style is tangible even in his shorter, less difficult pieces such as his mazurkas and waltzes. Our selection offers a progressive introduction to the musical language of this Polish-French master.

Although it was only published in 1905, Debussy made it clear that this was an early work by writing the date of composition “1890” on the proofs. He had sold the manuscript, now lost, to the publisher Choudens in 1890 without it actually being published. Yet the delayed publication date shows that Debussy was still very convinced of the value of the work. The composition has four movements and became popular in particular on account of the slow movement Clair de lune (HN 391), which seems to evoke the atmosphere of a moonlit night with its particular aura. Countless transcriptions for various groups of instruments demonstrate the unbroken popularity of the piece, but also of the complete suite.

In a span of only eight years, between 1794-1802, Beethoven composed twenty piano sonatas, among them his so-called “Grande sonate pathétique” op. 13. It marks the consummation of his Classical style, yet also already alludes to his Heroic Period with its intensely Romantic characteristics. Composed in the “tragic” key of C minor, it foreshadows the expressive drama of later masterworks such as the Fifth Symphony or the Coriolan Overture. Of the famous sonatas, this one is the most technically manageable and thus proves immensely popular with advanced piano students. The new Urtext edition from G. Henle Publishers hails from the successful Beethoven collaboration between Norbert Gertsch and Murray Perahia, as usual with fingering and interpretive suggestions from the great pianist.

Pedagogical in nature, these editions offer insightful interpretive suggestions, pertinent fingering, and historical and stylistic commentary. Throughout his life, Satie was so surrounded with the creative and modern atmosphere that permeated La Belle Epoque (The Beautiful Era), that he himself became a symbol of the age. These six short pieces from the composer's early years capture the graceful conventionality that defines Satie. Intermediate Level.

You do not need to be a piano virtuoso to enter into the dream world of French Impressionism. With Debussy this is especially straightforward because he knows how to create masterly miniatures possessing poetic depth, even with simple technical means. “Clair de lune” is probably the best known of these, though by no means the only example, as our selection here proves. And whoever works through this volume successfully can then play a real concert piece in the shape of “La Cathédrale engloutie,” the final work in our selection.

The Preludes of Op. 28 include all 24 major and minor tonalities arranged in a circle of fifths, with each major key being followed by its relative minor. Contrary to custom of using this type of piece as didactic material, Chopin's cycle was intended as concert music. The Preludes are a diverse variety of mood, tempo, articulation, texture, etc.
The National Edition of the Works of Fryderyk Chopin
Published by PWM
Exclusively Distributed by Hal Leonard Corporation
Co-Editors
Jan Ekier and Pawel Kaminski
The objective of the National Edition is to present Chopin's complete output in its authentic form, based on the entire body of available sources. Sources were analyzed with up-to-date scientific and musicological methodology.
The National Edition was based on sources originated from the composer, mainly autographs, copies of autographs and first editions with the composer's corrections, and pupils' copies with Chopin's annotations. In cases when original sources were lacking, the closest possible materials were used. Collecting the source materials was a laborious task which took years of effort.
The characteristics of sources, the links and discrepancies between them as well as the reasons for particular editorial decisions are discussed in the Source Commentary in each volume.
The Performance Commentary appended to each volume includes: the realization of ornaments, comments on pedal markings (the original markings sometimes are inadequate, due to the difference in sound between pianos used in Chopin`s times and modern pianos), suggestions as to the “harmonic legato” (a performance technique often used by Chopin and now forgotten).

Alexander Scriabin occupies a special position among the Russian piano composers around the turn of the 19th to the 20th century. Already in his early works, he went beyond the Chopinesque traditions of his contemporaries Glazunov and Rachmaninoff. As he also did in his innumerable preludes, of which he brough together 24 in his op. 11, allowing for each major and minor key. However, in spite of keeping to the strict order of the circle of fifths, he took care to ensure that “each prelude is a small composition which can exist self-contained, independent of the other preludes.” By comparing the autograph and the first edition of 1897, this Henle Urtext edition has corrected a number of errors and inaccuracies. A grandiose work which should belong in the repertoire of every pianist.

When his contemporaries heard the works that Johannes Brahms had composed during his summer holiday in Ischl in 1893 – the Piano Pieces op. 118 – they were delighted. Clara Schumann was one of the first to be allowed to get to know the new pieces, and she attested that they contained “a wealth of sentiment in the smallest of dimensions.” Philipp Spitta fittingly said that the works were “perfect for slowly absorbing in solitude and tranquility.” Opus 118 contains two of the composer's best-known miniatures – the Intermezzo in A major and the Romance in F major. This volume is based on the musical text in the New Brahms Complete Edition.
