As concertmaster of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra for many decades, violin virtuoso Ferdinand David was a close friend of Felix Mendelssohn, who wrote his famous Violin Concerto for him. David was additionally a sought-after teacher at the Leipzig Conservatory, editor and composer. His works are all but forgotten today, with one exception: his Concertino for trombone and orchestra. The charming work with “Mendelssohnian” character has firmly established itself in the trombone repertoire and is today one of the standard international audition pieces. The autograph score of the Concertino is considered lost, however - in addition to the first edition - the autograph of a version made by David for cello and piano was able to be tracked down and evaluated for this Urtext edition.

Camille Saint-Saëns was always trying to expand the rather sparse repertoire for chamber music for wind instruments, something that is not least also shown by his three late wind sonatas for oboe, clarinet and bassoon respectively (HN 964, 965, 966). The trombone also came into its own as a solo instrument with the Cavatine, composed in 1915. It displays here its lyrical, romantic side. To date the Cavatine, an effective recital piece, is a milestone in the solo literature for advanced trombone players. Composed in 1956 by Henri Tomasi (1901-1971), French composer, conductor and winner of the Grand Prix de Rome in 1927, this Concerto for Trombone and Orchestra has a strong French signature and lasts 16 minutes. The first movement starts with the trombone and ends with a waltz theme, the second movement is built on an ostinato that makes the trombone sound more lyrical.
