Concertino for Bassoon, Opus 171 was commissioned by Dr. Mark Rogers and was premiered in April 2023 by the University of Kansas Wind Ensemble, Dr. Paul Popiel conductor, with Eric Stomberg playing bassoon. The work is in one movement. Like so many famous works for bassoon, it is based in F major. The piece is in a modified five-part rondo form, with the slow middle portion in Bb serving as the B theme. Rather jolly in nature, the work is intended to show off not only the happy nature of the bassoon, but also to demonstrate its expressive lyricism and dazzling technique.

Elena Kats-Chernin wrote Afterwards for the 18th birthday of a young acquaintance, Guy Knopke, who had just started playing the bassoon. The title refers to “the new adventures and changes that can lie ahead after a significant milestone”, according to the composer. She created a solo [also duo] piano version for herself, which is published in the anthology Piano Village (BB 3409). The final version of the original for bassoon and piano, which is no longer quite suitable for beginners, was recorded on CD by Elena Kats-Chernin together with the soloist Lorelei Dowling on Chromart Classics in 2017.

The rondo form, the characteristic rhythm, the incipit of the melodic contour and the graceful mood of this gavotte are inspired by the 3rd Partita for solo violin in E major (BWV 1006) by Johann Sebastian Bach. The harmonic tonal style is expanded by chords with added notes and modulations to distant keys.
