Ballade for Alto Saxophone and Piano was composed in 1938 by the French composer Henri Tomasi (1901-1971). Introduced by a poem by Suzanne Mallard, his wife, Ballade is a 15-minute work that covers and alternates between different styles such as andantino, guigue and blues. The poem refers to a clown who claims his story to the night. It is a short poem of four verses, composed with rhymes in A/B/A/B formation. Henri Tomasi, who won the Grand Prix de Rome in 1927, also composed a variety of concertos for alto saxophone, for trumpet and for trombone, as well as some ballades.

French composer, Paul Dukas (1865-1935) is best known for his orchestral piece, The Sorcerer's Apprentice. However, his catalogue represents many other significant works by the composer, including Alla Gitana for alto saxophone and piano. Composed in 1909, Alla Gitana was originally a selection of vocal studies. However, Marcel Mule's transcription for alto saxophone has made this delightful work more accessible. Dukas reflects the French romantic style in Alla Gitana through uses of flourishing semiquavers, lyrical melodies and chromaticism. Composed between 1920 and 1921, Stories is a suite of ten short movements by Jacques Ibert (1890-1962), a neoclassical composer who won the Prix de Rome in 1919. Initially written for piano only and later arranged for saxophone and piano, this publication was commissioned by Alphonse Leduc editor and increased Jacques Ibert's popularity. Canzonetta, Op. 19 is a piece for alto saxophone and piano accompaniment composed by Gabriel Pierné and arranged by Marcel Mule. Initially written for clarinet and piano, the piece was written in 1888 and can be played by advanced players with a fairly high difficulty level. Composed in a single movement, the piece features some different sections linked together. It starts with dotted rhythms that are slightly reminiscent of a siciliano, and is followed by a part that sounds like a scherzando. The dotted rhythms disappear in the Piu Vivo section but the opening theme soon comes back before a grandiose finale. Gabriel Pierné (1863-1937) was a French composer, conductor and organ player. He won the French Prix de Rome 1882.

French composer, Robert Planel (1908-1994) was the son of composer and founder of the Music School of Montelimar, Alphonse Planel. Planel junior was an exceptionally accomplished musician, reflected in his composition, Romantic Suite for alto saxophone and piano.
