By popular request, these songs and pieces from the 5 volume English edition (by Margaret Murray) of Carl Orff and Gunild Keetman's 'Schulwerk' are now available in CD format. Singers and speakers are from a variety of English, Welsh and German schools with professional musicians playing instruments. The Schulwerk idea is one that transplants well, founded as it is on the basic elements of language, music and dance, with which children are encouraged to play and improvise imaginatively, so that, through the use of simple forms, they will be able to make their own music. The material is not restricted to Britain, but also includes songs from Canada and the United States. The instrumental ensemble is directed by Carl Orff and Hermann Regner. All possible instrumental resources suited to this elemental style of music making have been used.
The barred percussion instruments that carry Orff's name such as glockenspiels, xylophones and metallophones, are used, as well as simple, small percussion instruments and the larger ones found in the conventional orchestra. The older forms of wind instruments are favoured, such as recorders, sorduns and crumhorns. Brass instruments such as trumpets and trombones, are also used. The guitar, cello and double bass have an important role, and, where available, the older forms of string instruments, such as the viol or viola da gamba, blend well into the ensemble.

This book presents a selection of play songs and related activities in sensory awareness, movement and dance, voice and language, playing instruments, listening, visualizing, social forms and drama. It is written for kindergarten and elementary teachers working with children ages 4-9, for music teachers and for teachers working with groups of mixed ability. It aims to widen the repertoire of songs, topics and related activities, to enhance the experience of singing, moving and playing instruments together as well as to stimulate one's own creativity to invent new extensions. The wide range of activities for each song enables teachers to work with children of different ages and abilities ensuring that no one is over- or under-challenged and that each child can learn, play and contribute to the whole on his or her own level.

Carl Orff devoted much of his life to music for children. His pioneering work continues under the guidance of teachers and educators in many countries. The five basic German volumes of “Music for Children” by Carl Orff and Gunild Keetman were published between 1950 and 1954. The considerable growth of Orff-Schulwerk in the United States led to the publication of the American Edition (1977) to satisfy the requirements of a different educational system and national heritage. Music for Children is a stimulating source of material for music teaching. Orff's fundamental educational ideas have revitalized music education from nursery schools to secondary education and in special music schools, based on the concepts that music, dance and language are interrelated and animated through rhythm. At the opening of the Orff Institute in Salzburg in 1963, Carl Orff ended his speech with a quotation from Schiller: 'I have done my part, now do yours.' That challenge has been taken up by teachers worldwide.Hall/Walter Edition, Based on Volumes 1, 2 and 4 of the original German Edition “Musik für Kinder,” English adaption with additional material by Doreen Hall and Arnold Walter.
