Written between 1732 and 1735, J.S. Bach's COFFEE CANTATA is one of his few secular cantatas. ARIA No. 8, is joyous and uplifting; awonderful example of the mature baroque compositional style. The plot of the CANTATA centers around Lieschen (soprano), who vows to her father that she will give up drinking coffee if she can find true love. Scored for intermediate string orchestra at a medium difficulty, this arrangement uses many of the voicings of the original score, but has been shortened to keep the performance time ata manageable length. Suggested dynamics, articulation and bowings have been included for ease of performance.

Though in 1744 Handel presented the oratorio BELSHAZZAR as an oratorio, or religious work, it was later staged many times operatically. The opening should be neither too slow or too fast, and perhaps maybe thought of as an introductory fanfare for strings. (The original included oboes.) For better attack, bowing marked in the score as 'hooked' may rather be played separately and nearer the frog, but this might require greater technical ability.

James Reese Europe (1881-1919) was an influential New York bandleader and composer during the first two decades of the 20th century. He first came to prominence as one of the founders of The Clef Club, an organization that provided musical support and performance opportunities for the citys Black musicians. Europe later commanded the U.S. Army regiment during World War I, and was decorated for bravery for his service on the Western Front. While Clef Club March was originally published in several different arrangements, all but a handful of orchestral parts have been lost to history. This arrangement provides the rare opportunity for string players to perform an outstanding march by this historically important American composer.

Written in 1739, George Frideric Handel's Concerti Grossi Op. 6 are among the most popular pieces he composed for strings. The stately Larghetto and spirited Allegro ma non troppo of the Concerto No. 3 in E minor make a delightful pairing. Originally scored for two solo (ripieno) violins and cello with accompanying strings and basso continuo, the Larghetto and Allegro have been adapted and re-scored for string orchestra. All parts are within the abilities of intermediate-level groups and are a wonderful way to introduce elements of Baroque style.

The Nighthawk of Golden Bell was commissioned for the 30th anniversary of Camp Con Brio (formerly the Colorado ASTA String Camp), which the composer founded in 1995. The camp is currently held every summer at nearly 10,000 feet elevation at the Golden Bell Camp above the town of Divide, Colorado. The work is programmatic, bringing to life a poem about the quest of a young camper who must decide between the security of the familiar and the uncertainty of the unknown. The poem is an allegory for the choices we make in life. A short introduction (including a disguised quote from Stravinski's Firebird) is followed by an exciting quest including wolf howls and bird screeches. At a mountain summit, the child receives council from a mythical bird before continuing the journey.

Liszt opens his sprawling oratorio Christus with this straightforward instrumental fugue. Marked with the opening words of Isaiah 45:8: Rorate coeli (Heavenly Dew Drops), the fugue adapts the opening musical phrase of the antiphon (chant) on this text for its subject. It thereby gives expression to the longing of the biblical patriarchs and prophets for the coming of righteousness through the advent of the Messiah. The fugue climaxes in measures 41-42, where violins and violas descend with sequential repetitions of the subjects only major third, itself descending.

This is a piece that has seen several iterations, originally composed for the Trance genre, then modified for string quartet and finally string orchestra. I was inspired by how human beings solve complex problems. Multiple thought processes occur at the same time, all independent, or sparked off each other. The individual may dwell on these patterns for a while until finally, a single voice emerges. This is the decision or the solution to the problem we seek. Human beings are amazing and will never cease to amaze me. In short, the human being is an enigma.

Ferdinand Joseph LeMonthe (c. 1890-1941), better known by his pen name “Jelly Roll” Morton, was a New Orleans-born ragtime pianist, composer, and band leader. One of the first musicians to play the New Orleans music that would come to be known as “jazz,” he was also one of the first artists to notate his jazz compositions on paper. He would claim, years later, that he had “invented” jazz, something historians dispute. His popular works include Dead Mans Blues, King Porter Stomp, Alabama Bound, and the Tiger Rag. His 1920s recordings by his hand-picked band The Red Hot Peppers are considered classics in the early jazz idiom. Morton's The New Orleans Blues appears to have been composed between 1900-1910, when the composer was touring the United States.

Cajuns are the descendants of Catholic French Canadians whom the British Empire expelled from the captured French territory of Acadia (modern-day Nova Scotia and its surrounding areas) in the 18th century. They emigrated to an area of rural south Louisiana, territory owned by France prior to the Louisiana Purchase, which the new settlers called “Acadiana.” Modern Cajuns maintain connections to their heritage and culture through the French language and dialect, their cuisine, and their music. The Mamou Two-Step is named after the Louisiana town of Mamou, given the epithet of “The Cajun Music Capital of the World.”
