Written towards the end of 2020, “Be Still” is a reflective piece on the year gone by. In a year where lockdowns became a thing, the idea of time became more apparent to me as everyday markers, such as meeting with friends and family, travelling or attending concerts vanished.
Whilst writing “Be Still” the opening lines of TS Eliot's Burnt Norton, the first of his Four Quartets, came to mind:
Time present and time past/ Are both perhaps present in time future/And time
Future contained in time past/ If all time is eternally present/ All time is unredeemable.
And as I look back at the year and attempt to fix in my mind events, they slither away from my grasp like clouds passing by in thesky.

Cave of the Winds was originally written by Robert Nathanial Dett as a march for piano and subtitled “March and Two Step”. Devon Morales arranged this boisterous, carnival romp with lightness and frivolity at a Level 3. Students will enjoy performing chromatic scales, hooked bows, and triplet 16th notes to create a playful rendition of a march which was said to have been admired by John Philip Sousa. Morales' instrumentation provides a clarity to this march, allowing the melody to shine through while the other voices bounce along underneath. Cave of the Winds by Dett, arranged by Morales, is a fun and entertaining piece for players and audiences alike!

Robert Sieving's arrangement of Allegro for Double String Orchestra by Antonio Vivaldi, RV593, originally a motet featuring the vocal setting of Psalm 69 for soprano, 2 oboes, 2 SATB choirs, and double string orchestra, provides the opportunity for two orchestras to perform in opposition and have a musical conversation through fugal writing. Sieving has maintained Vivaldi's writing and sound, as the two orchestras battle it out to be the reigning orchestra. Each orchestra and section have interesting parts, with string crossings, minimal shifting, stylistic Baroque bow use, and call and response sections or echo sections. Invite a neighboring orchestra to perform this wonderful double string piece or divide your orchestra in two groups. Such a wonderful addition to our Vivaldi repertoire by Robert Sieving at Level 3.
