The chamber music works are among Hindemith's most successful instrumental works of the 1920s. But the title is misleading: The individual pieces actually have concertante soloistic features instead of submitting to chamber music traditions. Chamber Music No. 7 focuses on the organ. Written for the broadcaster Frankfurter Sender, the work took then virulent music recording and broadcasting problems on the radio into account in its instrumentation for chamber music and the elaboration of the musical setting. The score is based on Vol. IV/3 (PHA 403) of the Hindemith Complete Edition, edited by Giselher Schubert.

Already in 1933, Partch showed interest in composing a dramatic setting of Oedipus. He finished a first version on 31 July 1951 and the work was premiered in March of the following year. For this second version, Partch added more instruments and changed the role of the “Spokesman”. In the third and final version of 1967 Partch changed the instrumentation again slightly - especially his Gourd Tree and Cone Gongs were added.

Fascinated by the idea that there could be an omniscient witch, Partch wrote these ten scenes for a singer and ensemble. The musicians and their movements are part of the plot in which people are freed from various problems by a witch. Most of the required instruments and the sound system used were developed by Partch itself.

Although in one movement, at its centre are two expressive sections, which alternate with more rapid writing. The soloist plays a concertante role with the orchestra.
In both the solo part and the orchestral texture, a six-note chord can be heard throughout the work, either concealed or more overtly, given to soloists drawn from the orchestra. At the start of the work, the solo violin announces these six pitches, first as a monody, then double-stopped; this material is then distributed vertically (played as a chord) by various instrumental groups. Mirror writing and different orchestral colors transform this chord, but it is omnipresent, and obsession.
This relatively short work is dedicated to Anne-Sophie Mutter, and was premiered by Mutter and the London Philharmonic Orchestra on April 28, 2002.
