New edition of this 1999-2000 dialogue between the two orchestral families of woodwind and brass, each with their respective material. Their initial characters, equating to the poetic stereotypes of 'masculine' and 'feminine', become progressively blurred and androgynised during the course of the work as larger sound masses give way to chamber music-style sub-groupings and individual instrumental solos. The wind-only scoring of the work posed various compositional challenges. The composer has stated that 'if no-one is playing, nothing is heard', so the illusion of sustained sound has to be created without the support of a string section. Similarly, clear attack and accentuation have to be carefully sculpted, as there is no percussion to help articulation. In the wordsof the London Times, “Lindberg, a master of orchestral sound, has chosen virtually the same forces as Stravinsky in his Symphonies of Wind Instruments, and with its five connected movements Gran Duo is a symphony in the modern sense...a darkly brooding yet peaceful work that reflects something of a unique landscape.”

Concertino Da Camera, written in 1935 by Jacques Ibert (1890-1962), is a small concerto for Alto Saxophone and sax ensemble: 1 sopranino, 2 sopranos, 3 altos, 2 tenors, 2 baritones and 1 bass. This concertino in two movements, Allegro con moto and Larghetto Animato Molto, is dedicated to the saxophonist Sigurd Rascher and is notable for its large use of the Alto-Saxophone. It can be technically challenging and has a strong lyrical part. This volume features the parts for all instruments as well as the full score. Its author, Jacques Ibert (1890-1962), is a neoclassical composer who won the Prix de Rome in 1919. He composed many symphonic suites, operas and seven orchestras, including 'Angelique' (1926) and 'Divertissement' (1930). He was also in charge of the Accadémie de France in the Villa Médicis (Roma) and was later administrator for the Paris Opera. This concerto has some similarities with his Flute Concerto (1934), also published by Alphonse Leduc.

These eight pieces have been selected from a collection of 18th century music for three clarinets. The original title reads: “Partia a Tre”. The collection consists of thirty short pieces, all of them anonymous, except for number one in this book. 'Di Rösser' is probably Valentin Roeser, clarinettist, composer and author of “Essai d'instruction à l'usage de ceux qui composent pour la clarinette et le cor” (1764).

In four short movements following each other 'attacca,' the Turkish composer and pianist Fazil Say humorously describes an everyday scene in an Anatolian village: Alevi fathers drinking raki at a well-laid table. An andantino ritornello in irregular meters returning in all movements provides the thematic context of an eventful action.
