In setting Richard Dehmel's poem “Verklärte Nacht” (Transfigured Night) in his op. 4, the young Arnold Schönberg pursued the intention, as he himself said, of “attempting those new forms in chamber music which have been created in orchestral music based on a poetic idea”. Composed in September 1899 in a few weeks whilst he was on holiday, the Sextet incorporates the ideas of the symphonic poem in its programmatic character and its one-movement form, and also displays late Romantic traits in its opulent tone. Already at its premiere in 1902 in Vienna, the special quality of the work was recognised, characterised by “peculiar sound combinations and groundbreaking figures”, a work which was to become a true modern classic in the 20th century. For this Urtext edition, both the autograph score and the 1905 first edition have been consulted, as well as Schönberg's personal copies which are preserved in Vienna and contain numerous markings by the composer.

In 1990 a short score of Strauss's late masterpiece Metamorphosen was discovered in Switzerland and acquired by the Bavarian State Library in Munich. It is headed 'Metamorphosen. Andante (für 2 Violinen, 2 Bratschen, 2 Celli[,] Contrabass) Richard Strauss'. This gives rise to the assumption that the composer had clearly conceived the piece as scored for seven strings and then changed his mindon receiving a commission from Paul Sacher to write a work for a larger string group. The short score bears the date 31 March 1945 at the end, the full score for twenty-three strings having already been started on 13 March. Rudolf Leopold, concert cellist and professor of cello at the University of Music, Graz, prepared the septet performing version of Metamorphosen, of which the study score was published in 1996. He explains that, for the most part, the 23-part version consists of doublings. “In the realisation of the 'original version' for string sextet and double bass I have made use of both the short score and the final score so that the complete tonal image appears in a chamber music format whilst retaining certain interesting details from the short score (for example the original closing modulation).”

Brahms's First String Sextet became very popular after its publication in 1861, yet his publisher Simrock still hesitated when the composer offered him a second such work in 1865, “in the same cheerful mood.” So Brahms made overtures to other publishers, but then Simrock finally agreed to take it on. The critics were initially rather sceptical towards this Sextet op. 36, but Brahms's friends thoroughly approved of it. Clara Schumann praised its accomplished motivic work, while others enthused about its magical sound colors. This practical edition by Katrin Eich, based on the Brahms Complete Edition, now offers performers the opportunity to form their own opinion, whether in performance or by perusing our study edition. The parts include player-friendly cue notes and have excellent page-turns.

Eric Whitacre's “Sleep” began as a choral composition, setting the text of the Robert Frost poem “Stopping By Woods on a Snowy Evening.” Because of some difficulty securing permissions to use the text, Whitacre came up with the solution of asking poet Charles Anthony Silvestri to set new words to the already-composed music. The piece has been transcribed for several ensembles including cello octet by cellist Jeffrey Zeigler.
