The unusual cast with flute (also piccolo and alto flute), cello and percussion (2 players with xylophone, metallophones, crotales, glockenspiel, woodblocks, drums and temple block) corresponds to the preference of Urusla Mamlok for harsh sounds and clearly audible lines and structures. The designations “Toccata”, “Refrains”, “Variations” and “Epilogue” reveal that their compositional thinking is determined not by pictorial but rather by purely musical suggestions. All four movements together are no more than 10 minutes long - as early as 1969, when the Divertimento was written, the composer strove for the utmost precision, scarcity and condensation, which was to form the basis of her whole further work. Schaffrath was one of the circle of musicians and composers gathered about the music-loving Frederic II of Prussia. As early as 1734 the Crown Prince mentioned his name as a member of the Ruppin orchestra. Schaffrath may be singled out as one of the most interesting and innovative composers of the Berlin circle.

Written to celebrate the Olivier Messiaen centennial in 2008, Lieuwen scored Gulfstream for the same instruments as Messiaen's landmark Quartet for the End of Time: clarinet, violin, cello, and piano. The work is a musical representation of the Gulfstream current, conceived as the composer reflected upon its influence on weather and global climate change.
