The Trio G major / E minor op. 103 by the Oppenheim composer and student Max Reger can be assigned to the composer's late work based on the opus number, even if no year of composition or premiere can be determined. The work for the unusual instrumentation of clarinet, horn and piano presented the editor Wolfgang Birtel with the challenge of developing an authentic musical text from the original manuscript, which was riddled with careless errors. Since no other sources for this work are available, the practical exchange with the Else Ensemble was a great benefit for Birtel. The current edition of this trio makes another attractive chamber music work by this late-romantic composer accessible.

“It is quite clear to me what is missing from today's music: a Mozart!” With his trios which he consciously kept in a classical manner, Reger hoped to prove the contrary to the “ignorant people,” who for their part accused him of “a lack of feeling” and being too “complicated.” The instrumentation for his serenades op. 77a and 141a is rather distinctive: he omits the lower registers, opting for the bright tones of the flute, violin and viola to outline joyful musical figures and catchy melodies. Reger's own style cannot however be mistaken. These two serenades, which are technically not overly demanding, are not only suited for concert performances but also offer a welcome change for those engaging in spontaneous chamber music.

In Hans Winterberg's turbulent first half of his life, there were two periods of calm, phases in which he must have had the feeling of having “arrived”, of making his way and enjoying the recognition that his extraordinary talent deserved. In the mid-1930s, when he had started a family in Prague and created his first masterpieces as a freelance composer. Then again around 1950, when, as a Holocaust survivor, he gained a foothold in Munich after fleeing Czechoslovakia and was able to celebrate his first significant successes with performances by the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra and the city's top musicians. Hardly any other work by Winterberg radiates such self-assurance and confidence as the Trio for clarinet (or violin), cello and piano, composed in 1950, the year of the first successful performance of his 1st Piano Concerto by the Munich Philharmonic. With its four movements and a playing time of over 15 minutes, it is one of his more extensive chamber music works, bringing together all the characteristics of his oeuvre in a successful symbiosis: Impressionist sensuality of sound, neoclassical charm and folkloristic high spirits – Winterberg's Trio 1950, published for the first time in its two versions now, is a substantial enrichment of the 20th century trio repertoire.

London, with its bustling musical scene, always provided Haydn with welcome surroundings at a time when the flute was extraordinarily popular among English amateurs. The Earl of Abingdon, an accomplished flautist, undoubtedly enjoyed playing these entertaining trios. Abingdon was a member of Haydn's circle of acquaintances in London and a composer in his own right: a theme from one of his songs (“The Lady's Mirror”) served Haydn for a set of variations in the second trio. Neither men could have foreseen the huge success that these cheerful and straightforward pieces would enjoy among music-lovers all over the world.

Composer's note:
“This piece (originally for cello and piano) was written for an exhibition devoted to artists suffering schizophrenia in 2006. At the base of the piece is a 4-chord progression, very simple and minimal. A person with schizophrenia hears voices, which can be verydisturbing; there is a yearning for silence. I wrote this work so that my son Alex who suffers from the illness can listen to calmness, meditation. Its called Blue Silence because blue is sometimes associated with healing. In the 2009 arrangement for clarinet, cello and piano, there is a lot of interplay and echo between the single line instruments, i.e. they are not playing a lottogether, rather one after the other.”
