Just as Johannes Brahms had done with his Opus 120, Reger also provided parts for two alternative solo instruments for his Sonata op. 107: “I will also arrange the clarinet part for viola, so that the work can also be played thus” (letter to his publisher). He by no means wanted to leave the arrangement of the viola part to the publisher, as slurs had to be changed here and there as well as octave transpositions had to be made – “Only I can do this work!” The viola's sonorous mid range comes close to that of the clarinet, but lends the work its own timbre. Viola players will also value this Urtext edition on account of the practical fingerings and bowing marks.

Henri Vieuxtemps was a remarkably productive composer who wrote seven violin concertos, concert etudes, two viola sonatas and a dozen or so chamber works, yet the bulk of his output consists of works for violin and piano. Vieuxtemps's favorite musical form was the then-fashionable fantasy on themes from well-known operas, of which he left us quite a number. The Romance originally composed for violin and piano is based on a theme from Stanislaw Moniuszko's national opera Halka (Jontek's famous aria 'Szumia jodly na gór szcycie' [The firs sough on the mountain top.]). The present edition is based on Zdzislaw Jahnke's 1952 edition. This work gives the player the opportunity to display a beautiful tone and proficiency in both the left and right hand; it is also a marvelous exercise in rubato playing.

A real treasure trove in the scarce Romantic viola literature: Vol. 1 of the popular Pièces des concours series are now followed by Vol. 2 and Vol. 3. The pieces were performed in final examinations at the famous Conservatoire de Paris between 1897 and 1969. The publication is based on the first editions. In order to make it easier to approach the works, 'modern' fingerings and common bowing instructions were added to the pieces so that they can be played at sight.
