This work for viola and piano was composed in memory of Sarah Gibson, the composer, pianist and educator who passed away in 2024 at the age of 38. From the program note by Donald Crockett: “This ELEGY FOR SARAH evokes a specific time and place: during the height of Covid, violist Kate Vincent and Sarah Gibson gave a backyard concert at Kate's and my house, in three sets, each with an audience of six on the driveway facing the music studio with Sarah and Kate making music just inside the open French doors. For the concert I chose an excerpt of a piece I'd written for Kate, now in an arrangement for viola and piano. This served as a point of departure for the ELEGY, with a tribute to Sarah's characteristic 'indie-rock' style and with a tombeau at its core. The cowbells framing the ELEGY, accompanying Sarah on her journey home, were hanging on the majestic oak tree in the backyard in clear view of our miniature concert.” The violist also plays two “backyard Tibetan cowbells,” which are available from the composer.

Mendelssohn's viola sonata is an early work which remained unpublished in his lifetime. The autograph is dated “d. 14 Febr. 1824.” Thus Mendelssohn was 15 years old when he completed the sonata. It assuredly numbers amongst his most mature early chamber music works. The key already indicates the seriousness with which the composer set to work. The first movement is preceded by a short adagio introduction. The middle movement, a menuetto, retains the key of c minor and not even the trio with its chorale-like melody lightens the minor mood. The closing movement is an andante with eight variations. This Urtext edition is a welcome addition to the scant classical-romantic viola repertoire.

Thanks to the publisher's good connections to Russian archives, they were able to assess Glazunov's autograph for the first time for this first Urtext edition, and uncover the discrepancies between the autograph and the first print. Written in 1893 for the Danish violist Franz Hildebrand, the Élégie is one of the few original works of the 19th century for viola and thus a welcome enrichment of the repertoire. Since the piece does not make any particularly high technical demands on the soloist, the Élégie is ideally suited for teaching as well - and Tabea Zimmermann's fingerings guarantee the best possible support.
