This concerto has the unusual addition of an optional male voice choir. Many Russian elements influenced Bryars when he was writing the piece, not least the text for the bass voices which is taken from Glinkas song cycle Farewell to St Petersburg. Bryars writes “The orchestration is quite light throughout, so that the singing quality of the double bass can emerge. The emphasis in terms of tessitura is on the middle register, though in the closing section there is a passage in natural harmonics. Although the piece is not designed to be a virtuoso showpiece, there is a brief cadenza in which the soloist is supported at times by other solo instruments (bass clarinet, viola, cello, bass).” MORE»

Peteris Vasks from Latvia, who is known for his atmospheric pieces for string orchestra “Cantabile”, “Musica dolorosa” and “Voices”, is concentrating increasingly on chamber music. He was commissioned to compose a ten-minute solo for double bass for the 2003 ARD music competition in Munich. As Vasks himself studied the double bass, it is an effective virtuoso piece well suited to the instrument which awaits the performer, and there is what is probably a very unusual surprise at the end: the player sings (or whistles) a simple waltz melody as a serenade to accompany himself.

Again and again, Holliger enhances his virtuoso compositions by reviving historical traditions. In Preludio e Fuga, this return to history refers to the scordatura of the so-called 'Viennese temperament': It can be found in the most important repertoire pieces of the double bass (such as in Mozart's Concert Aira KV 612) as the third interval between the first to the third string and thinner strings which respond better. Produced in collaboration with Edicson Ruiz for whom Preludio e Fuga has been written, this edition presents the piece in two forms of notation to facilitate studying: in pitch and in finger notation.
