The first performance of the Concerto opus 33, in the orchestral version, took place on January 19, 1873, at the “Société des concerts du Conservatoire” in Paris. In this Concerto the cello takes the situation in hand from the very first measure, with an authoritative theme whose opening, in slightly modified form, will return over and over again, establishing itself as an element that, in its way, gives the concerto the allure of a cyclical work. Saint-Saëns takes advantage of all of the instrument's resources, in all of its registers, while exploiting the use of harmonics to the fullest. Historical introduction and editorial notes in French and English by Edmond Lemaître. New engraving.

Though only a minor pendant to the great Cello Concerto, Antonín Dvorák's Rondo Op. 94 is an effective and entertaining piece that belongs in the standard repertoire of every cellist. Dvorák composed it in December 1891 shortly before leaving for America, and he gave the work its première performance on 3 January 1892 with his friend, the cellist Hanus Wihan, during his farewell concert tour. To produce this urtext edition Milan Pospísil consulted the autograph score and first edition not only for the piano version, but also for the orchestral version of October 1893.

Immediately after finishing his second Violin Sonata op. 108, Fauré started work on a sonata for cello and piano in early 1917, thus realizing a long-conceived plan. In their predisposition and attitude, both works are very closely related. In the cello sonata, a sombre, dramatic opening movement is also followed by a calm, relaxed slow middle movement and a graceful finale. The critical response to the first performances was subdued, but on account of increasing interest in Fauré's complete late chamber music, this sonata has recently been rediscovered as a substantial part of his oeuvre. The Henle Urtext edition constitutes the first critical edition of this work. David Geringas, a master of his craft, supplied the markings in the cello part.

The work consists of a single movement subdivided into several sections representing the vision experienced by Don Quijote on his deathbed. The energetic and confused rhythm in the initial part of the composition is succeeded by moments of intensive grand drama before coming to a close in an atmosphere of despair, an almost nihilistic vision of Don Quijote himself who is doomed to continuing failure. Here, Quijote appears devoid of all heroism and greatness: he is a man contemplating his downfall at the end of his life. His feelings of pain and fruitless struggles take centre stage: this is the Quijote whom we will all experience at the end of our days. Pedro Halffter

Barbara Heller composed Inner Dialogue with a musical material consisting of several interval series arranged in a dialogue-like manner. The composer focuses on ascending and descending movements. Barbara Heller writes:
“I was particularly emotionally connected to one series of intervals, which can be found at the beginning of the second part (Lento)and the fifth part (Calmo): major sixth, minor second, fourth, major second, and tritone. This falling sixth triggered in me the attempt, after the semitone downward step, to climb back up with a rising fourth, and then back down again with the whole tone and the tritone – this resulted in an express ion that wouldn't let me go and touched me deeply. It was like a trap from which I couldn't escape. And so, as I worked on the cello piece, it became an inner dialogue: with the back and forth downwards and then upwards again, a kind of variation-like music that repeatedly – with small changes – was a self-questioning, an attempt to free myself from this 'motif,' which I failed to do.”
In this edition, the editor Beverley Ellis provides important suggestions for interpretation.
