The celebrated cello virtuoso Carter Brey made his foray into musical composition on a 1997 tour of Buenos Aires with the New York Philharmonic, and the result is Two Tangos for Solo Cello, which he enjoys playing as encores on his recitals. They are unapologetically in the mold of Astor Piazzolla, whom Brey had encountered several years earlier and was deeply influenced by. Presented in fold-out form to avoid page turns.

Originally composed for violoncello and piano, Schumann's opus 102 was also published in an edition for violin. In this new Urtext edition, practice-oriented string fingerings are included making this work excellently suited for the teaching of intermediate level students and beyond.
“Celebrating the 200th anniversary of Schumann's birth, Henle has released these rarely heard miniatures for cello and piano. They are quirky and short, but more substantial than first meets the ear...Goethe's poem 'Vanitas! vanitatum vanitas!' gives the first spirited piece its title--in contrast, the second is pastoral and nostalgic. The third allows the cello full romantic rein in a sonorous melody, while the fourth is a joyous dance giving way to a mellow tune. The fifth and lengthier last piece rounds out the set, reminiscent of the first.”--Strings magazine

Edvard Grieg's only Cello Sonata remains one of the best kept secrets among cellists. Grieg wrote it for his brother John, an accomplished player of the instrument. Though not a string player himself, by seeking advice during the compositional process Grieg was able to create an exhilarating piece that even advanced amateurs will be delighted to discover. Our edition also contains an early Intermezzo of 1866 as well as the first publication of Grieg's own transcription of the Allegretto from his Violin Sonata op. 45, written as a birthday serenade for his brother John.

At the beginning of the 1870s, Saint-Saëns displayed a particular partiality for the violoncello. He composed his first cello sonata in December 1872, immediately after having completed the first cello concerto. It was presumably directly after this that he wrote the “Allegro appassionato” for cello and piano op. 43 that also appeared in a version for orchestra three years later. We do not know why he wrote the work, but it is likely that after having written two weighty works for cello, Saint-Saëns wanted to write something “easier” that was also suitable as an encore. David Geringas kindly provided the fingering and bowing for the brilliant cello part.

Barbara Heller composed Inner Dialogue with a musical material consisting of several interval series arranged in a dialogue-like manner. The composer focuses on ascending and descending movements. Barbara Heller writes:
“I was particularly emotionally connected to one series of intervals, which can be found at the beginning of the second part (Lento)and the fifth part (Calmo): major sixth, minor second, fourth, major second, and tritone. This falling sixth triggered in me the attempt, after the semitone downward step, to climb back up with a rising fourth, and then back down again with the whole tone and the tritone – this resulted in an express ion that wouldn't let me go and touched me deeply. It was like a trap from which I couldn't escape. And so, as I worked on the cello piece, it became an inner dialogue: with the back and forth downwards and then upwards again, a kind of variation-like music that repeatedly – with small changes – was a self-questioning, an attempt to free myself from this 'motif,' which I failed to do.”
In this edition, the editor Beverley Ellis provides important suggestions for interpretation.

The work consists of a single movement subdivided into several sections representing the vision experienced by Don Quijote on his deathbed. The energetic and confused rhythm in the initial part of the composition is succeeded by moments of intensive grand drama before coming to a close in an atmosphere of despair, an almost nihilistic vision of Don Quijote himself who is doomed to continuing failure. Here, Quijote appears devoid of all heroism and greatness: he is a man contemplating his downfall at the end of his life. His feelings of pain and fruitless struggles take centre stage: this is the Quijote whom we will all experience at the end of our days. Pedro Halffter

This composition for violoncello and piano in the style of a Sicilian dance is from Gabriel Fauré's middle creative period and was first published simultaneously in France and England in 1898, reflecting Fauré's increasing international popularity. The character piece with its memorable, expressive melody became increasingly popular after Fauré had included it in the Suite from his incidental music of Pelléas et Mélisande (in a version for orchestra) that was also premiered in 1898.

The National Edition of the Works of Fryderyk Chopin
Published by PWM
Exclusively Distributed by Hal Leonard Corporation
Co-Editors
Jan Ekier and Pawel Kaminski
The objective of the National Edition is to present Chopin's complete output in its authentic form, based on the entire body of available sources. Sources were analyzed with up-to-date scientific and musicological methodology.
The National Edition was based on sources originated from the composer, mainly autographs, copies of autographs and first editions with the composer's corrections, and pupils' copies with Chopin's annotations. In cases when original sources were lacking, the closest possible materials were used. Collecting the source materials was a laborious task which took years of effort.
The characteristics of sources, the links and discrepancies between them as well as the reasons for particular editorial decisions are discussed in the Source Commentary in each volume.
The Performance Commentary appended to each volume includes: the realization of ornaments, comments on pedal markings (the original markings sometimes are inadequate, due to the difference in sound between pianos used in Chopin`s times and modern pianos), suggestions as to the “harmonic legato” (a performance technique often used by Chopin and now forgotten).

In 1849, Schumann turned to a new genre: works for piano and an accompanying instrument. The first works he composed were the Fantasy Pieces for piano and clarinet opus 73, immediately followed by opus 70. Schumann drew his publisher's attention to the “brilliant allegro,” whose solo part is so virtuosic that opus 70 is one of the showpieces for horn players even today. Schumann also wrote a part for violoncello.
“I imagine that most cellists are clamoring to buy the recently released Henle edition of Schumann's Adagio and Allegro. It's a welcome and needed addition to the publications available of this two-part composition that captures both the lyricism and fiery drama of Schumann's writing...this new Schumann edition is an important choice for any cellist's music library.” –Strings magazine

Aside from the Piano Quartet op. 13 and the Violin Sonata op. 18, the Cello Sonata numbers among the most mature works of chamber music from Strauss' early oeuvre. The influences of Mendelssohn, Schumann, and Brahms are noticeable, while leaving sufficient space for a very personal tonal language, often with surprising rhythmic and harmonic turns of phrase. Strauss subjected the first version completed in early 1881 to a radical revision over the winter of 1882/83; the opening movement was thoroughly reworked, the two subsequent movements rewritten completely. It was worth it, because after the premiere in Dresden, the composer wrote to his mother, “My sonata garnered extraordinary acclaim, the applause was enormous, congratulations came to me from all sides.”

“More than 20 years ago I was called upon by friends, artists, and aficionados to write about fingerings for the violoncello,” then-famous Berlin cellist Jean-Louis Duport thus opens his “Essai” from 1806, dedicated to “Professeurs de Violoncelle.” His methodology revolutionized cello technique, and the 21 etudes printed in its appendix are still regarded today as perhaps the most important set of studies for all budding cellists. Modelled after the volumes of etudes for violin, Henle is also issuing the Urtext here, together with all original fingerings and bowings, while also offering alternatives by the famous cellist and teacher Wolfgang Emanuel Schmidt. This edition also offers a second cello part provided by Duport for accompaniment.
