The sounds made by water – those of fountains, waterfalls and streams – were a popular subject in musical impressionism. Liszt had already explored this in his “Jeux d'eaux à la Villa d'Este,” and it was also a subject that inspired Ravel. At the same time he broke fresh compositional ground: in his “Jeux d'eau” he developed a kind of floating harmony and created new tonal effects. These shimmering tone paintings are among the first of our Urtext editions by this important French master. In order to provide musicians with a first-rate engraving for this highly complex music, we have slightly increased our Urtext format – and can thus guarantee excellent readability.

Franz Liszt is still regarded as one of the greatest pianists of all time: a superb virtuoso whose own piano works also bristle with extreme technical difficulties. But no one needs to be afraid of big names. Our carefully chosen selection from Liszt's immense oeuvre ranges here from the easy to the moderately difficult. These pieces are truly charming, and well-suited for “ordinary mortals.” And for those who reach the end of the volume, there's a worthwhile reward: perhaps Liszt's best-known piano piece, the third “Liebestraum.”
Contents: Sehr langsam from Four Piano Pieces • Andantino from Four Piano Pieces • Andante con moto from Consolations • Un poco più mosso from Consolations • Quasi adagio; cantabile con devzione from Consolations • Hymne de l'enfant à son réveil from Harmonies poétiques et religieuses • Le mal due pays from Années de Pèlerinage, Première Année - Suisse • Il penseroso from Années de Pèlerinage, Deuxième Année - Italie • Canzonetta del Salvator Rosa from Années de Pèlerinage, Deuxième Année - Italie • Aux Cypès dela Villa d'Este from Années de Pèlerinage, Troisième Année • Liebestraum in A-flat Major

The definitive edition (1987) of the piano teaching classic. Includes an introduction by the composer's son Peter Bartók. (English/French/German/Hungarian text). In 1945 Bela Bartok described Mikrokosmos as a cycle of 153 pieces for piano written for “didactic” purposes, seeing them as a series of pieces in many different styles, representing a small world, or as the “world of the little ones, the children”. Stylistically Mikrokosmos reflects the influence of folk music on Bartok's life and the rhythms and harmonies employed create music that is as modern today as when the cycle was written. The 153 pieces making up Mikrokosmos are divided into six volumes arranged according to technical and musical difficulty. Major teaching points highlighted in Mikrokosmos 3: Triplets, broken chords, chromatic invention.
Volume 3 contains Nos. 67-96

As well as Tchaikovsky's famous Piano Concerto, his extensive oeuvre for solo piano also makes an important contribution to romantic piano music. It includes “The Seasons” op. 37 – pleasant playable pieces that reflect a bygone bourgeois atmosphere and can therefore be assigned to the category of “domestic music.” These twelve intimate mood-pictures enable the pianist to plot the course of the twelve months of the year. No. 11, “Troika”, displays a Russian character particularly well, when in November the sleigh bells and the cheerful singing of the passengers create an enchanting sound. Our edition is based on the autograph and the Russian first edition; moreover it contains Klaus Schilde's highly regarded fingerings.

Bach most likely composed his Toccatas in his early creative years, between 1707 and 1713; they can be seen as the products of Bach's own “Sturm und Drang” period, and were not planned as an interconnected work cycle, but as autonomous works written at different times. As was customary for this genre, the toccatas emphasize virtuoso and improvisatory elements, and, occasionally, the recitative aspect as well. What is indispensable is Bach's mastery of the polyphonic technique, the rich harmonies, and the inexhaustible wealth of his inventiveness.

Of the variants in musical notation, those designated ossia were marked in this way by Chopin himself or inscribed in his hand in pupils' copies. The National Edition of the Works of Fryderyk Chopin
Published by PWM
Exclusively Distributed by Hal Leonard Corporation
Co-Editors
Jan Ekier and Pawel Kaminski
The objective of the National Edition is to present Chopin's complete output in its authentic form, based on the entire body of available sources. Sources were analyzed with up-to-date scientific and musicological methodology.
The National Edition was based on sources originated from the composer, mainly autographs, copies of autographs and first editions with the composer's corrections, and pupils' copies with Chopin's annotations. In cases when original sources were lacking, the closest possible materials were used. Collecting the source materials was a laborious task which took years of effort.
The characteristics of sources, the links and discrepancies between them as well as the reasons for particular editorial decisions are discussed in the Source Commentary in each volume.
The Performance Commentary appended to each volume includes: the realization of ornaments, comments on pedal markings (the original markings sometimes are inadequate, due to the difference in sound between pianos used in Chopin`s times and modern pianos), suggestions as to the “harmonic legato” (a performance technique often used by Chopin and now forgotten).

Whenever one speaks about Beethoven's piano music, it is usually his sonatas that come to mind. However, his other works for this instrument are of no less significance. Thus it is not a coincidence that Beethoven published the majority of his Bagatellen with an opus number, as this went hand in hand with a certain regard for the pieces in question: they represent Beethoven's lighter, more accessible side, disproving his all too hastily attributed reputation as a master of the weighty and serious.

Six original compositions for solo piano, by Michael Nyman, from the award winning film by Jane Campion. English composer Michael Nyman has developed into one of the most popular, if not important, composers of film music, and his film score for the 1992 film The Piano is without doubt the most famous and familiar of his compositions. The tone of Campion's film is perfectly emphasised by Nyman's style and though much here is beautiful and rich, it is a haunting and foreboding sound picture that reflects the greys of sea, sky and spirit.

Henle Publishers now presents this classic, revised and with a new look, to all pianists in the certainty that Haydn's sonatas will further cement their place in the world of music. Volume III offers the crowning achievement of Haydn's sonata-writing with these late works, including famous works such as the stormy Sonata in E minor Hob. XVI:34 and the “grand” Sonata in E-flat Major Hob. XVI:52. Superbly laid-out settings for the piano are combined here with great musical expressivity, which is why these sonatas remain firmly anchored in concert life to this day.

George Frideric Handel's powerful musical personality reveals itself not only in the large forms of opera, oratorio, and orchestra suite, but also in his compositions for keyboard. The focus here is on eight Suites of his first printed collection from 1720, which by no means comprise standardized sequences of dance movements. On the contrary – free-form movements of great artistic weight predominate, inserting themselves between lighter dance pieces. Handel's suites always display a distinctive individuality, and deserve a larger presence in our concert halls. We were able to engage Handel specialist Anthony Hicks as the editor of this Urtext edition.

Next to the polonaises and the waltzes, the mazurkas are the third dance form which Chopin cultivated in his music. They constitute the largest of these three groups, boasting nearly 60 pieces. Chopin made use of the mazurka genre from his childhood until the last years of his life. They testify not only to Chopin's love for his native Poland, but also to the depth of the composer's feeling for the mentality of his people. He took inspiration from the various types of mazurka found in different regions of Poland, but sublimated them into absolute music of the greatest elegance, refined harmonies and rhythmic power.

A spectacular finding concerning Mozart occured in the autumn of 2014 when a hitherto totally unknown manuscript by Mozart's own hand was discovered in Budapest. It is the larger part of the autograph of one of Mozart's most well-known piano sonatas – the Piano Sonata in A major which begins with the moving Siciliano theme and contains the everlasting “Turkish March” as its last movement.
Everyone is familiar with this piano work – and yet no one has yet known it entirely. It's only now that the definitive Urtext of important parts of this masterwork was able to be published. The deviations from the score of the sonata as generally used up until today can be regarded as grave differences. They are described in the edition. The detailed critical commentary is available free-of-charge for download on www.henle.de.

Liszt's piano rhapsodies are in the same tradition as his transcriptions of opera or song themes, but in this case the point of departure is folk dances and songs. Liszt described no. 2 of his Hungarian Rhapsodies, published in 1851, as “truly Hungarian,” and a “brilliant companion piece” to his own concert showpiece the Grand Galop chromatique. And indeed, the work, with its strong dynamic and harmonic contrasts, quickly became popular and remains among his best-loved keyboard works.
The long-inaccessible autograph of the work is now available for consultation again - reason enough for undertaking a careful revision of Henle's Urtext edition.

Pedagogical in nature, these editions offer insightful interpretive suggestions, pertinent fingering, and historical and stylistic commentary. Johann Friedrich Burgm]ller (1806-1874) was born into a German musical family; both his father and brother were also well-known composers. Settling in Paris after 1832, his light and intimate playing style won popularity in the salons of the day. Originally titled 25 Études faciles et progressives, composées et doigtées expressément pour l'entendue des petites mains, his Opus 100 pieces are perennial favorites among piano students and their teachers.
