Hummel's Trumpet Concerto is still one of the most popular concertos for this instrument. He composed it in 1803 for the Viennese court trumpeter Anton Waidinger, whose newly developed key-trumpet enabled him to play in a much more virtuoso manner than on the traditional natural trumpet. Our Urtext edition reproduces the work in the original key of E major with solo parts in E and for the more common trumpet in C. Due to the fact that the concerto is nowadays often performed in E flat major, our edition also contains a piano reduction in E flat major for trumpets in E flat and B flat. The different transpositions are now available in one single edition for the first time. Breitkopf & Härtel are publishing the performance material at the same time.

Intrada: from the outset, the title of Arthur Honegger's piece for trumpet and piano is programmatic. Composed in April 1947 for the Concours International dExécution Musicale de Genève [The Geneva International Music Competition], this work refers to the intradae, which functioned as overtures, written for brass instruments during the 16th and 17th centuries. Honeggers use of pentatonic modes throughout the entire piece is equally remarkable and creates an immediately recognisable stylistic unity. Introduction and notes on interpretation in French and English by André Feydy.

Also available for trumpet with concert band (HL44004952)
Manhattan was commissioned by the United States Army Band for their trumpet soloist Woodrow English, and first performed by them in Carnegie Hall, New York, in November 2003. Wanting to write a piece that demonstrated both the lyrical and technical abilities of this outstanding player, the composer decided on a two-movement work showcasing these qualities, and with the intention that the movements could be played individually when a shorter solo is required. The theme is a weekend in New York, and the opening bluesy movement (“Saturday Serenade”) describes the city on a Saturday night, perhaps in a smoke-filled jazz bar. While writing “Sunday Scherzo,” the composer pictured an early morning jog in Central Park. This vivaciously rhythmic movement ends with an even quicker coda which brings the work to a brilliant close. MORE»

Performed by Peter Ecklund
Accompaniment: Peter Ecklund's Bixieland Band
Along with Louis Armstrong, Bix Beiderbecke was one of the first jazz musicians to become renowned for his improvised solos. His unique style comes out of an interesting mixture of musical influences, some still well-known and some almost forgotten. His improvisations were based on the harmonies of the wonderful popular songs of his time, many of which are now recognized today as standards. His use of vibrato, a clear and bell-like attack, accurate intonation and an overall “solid” style make his music a modern revelation to those who haven't heard him. Join jazz trumpet master Peter Ecklund in this exploration of Beiderbecke's unique style. He demonstrates each of these golden musical standards, then you step in and perform as soloist with the band!
Includes an authoritative printed solo part, and access to online audio featuring a complete version with soloist, in digitally recorded stereo; then a digital stereo version of the accompaniment, minus the soloist.

The word “nexus” is defined as a tie or link between people and events. Nexus for solo trumpet and piano includes several links between composer James Curnow and educator Alfred Watkins, to whom the work is dedicated. A well-known theme (particularly to Mr. Watkins' students) is drawn upon as the piece utilizes two primary musical settings - an energetic and agile scherzo that appears in the beginning and again at the end, contrasted with an expressive ballad theme.
The soloist at the premiere (and on the recording) is Christopher Watkins, Alfred's son. This is a well-crafted and rewarding work for soloist and band alike. Dur: 6:00 (Recorded by the University of Alabama at Birmingham Wind Symphony – Dr. Sue Samuels, conductor. Christopher Watkins, trumpet soloist.)
Also available for trumpet with winds and percussion - HL04004300.
