Bozza (1905-1991) was a brilliant student at the Paris Conservatoire, winning prizes for the Violin, conducting and composing, as well as the Grand Prix de Rome. He predominantly composed chamber music for wind, but his solo works for the instruments are also held in high esteem, such as his Ballade for trombone and piano. This Bozza piece was originally composed for conservatoire students, displaying the technical skills as well as musicality of the soloist. There is no formal structure to Ballade, however, the many changes in tempo provide variety throughout. With no distinct musical theme unifying the music, it is interesting to note that much of the material of Bozza's Ballade is extracted from orchestral excerpts. Ballade is an ideal performance piece for advanced trombonists.

Camille Saint-Saëns was always trying to expand the rather sparse repertoire for chamber music for wind instruments, something that is not least also shown by his three late wind sonatas for oboe, clarinet and bassoon respectively (HN 964, 965, 966). The trombone also came into its own as a solo instrument with the Cavatine, composed in 1915. It displays here its lyrical, romantic side. To date the Cavatine, an effective recital piece, is a milestone in the solo literature for advanced trombone players. As concertmaster of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra for many decades, violin virtuoso Ferdinand David was a close friend of Felix Mendelssohn, who wrote his famous Violin Concerto for him. David was additionally a sought-after teacher at the Leipzig Conservatory, editor and composer. His works are all but forgotten today, with one exception: his Concertino for trombone and orchestra. The charming work with “Mendelssohnian” character has firmly established itself in the trombone repertoire and is today one of the standard international audition pieces. The autograph score of the Concertino is considered lost, however - in addition to the first edition - the autograph of a version made by David for cello and piano was able to be tracked down and evaluated for this Urtext edition.

Composed by Jean-Michel Defaye in 1954, Two Dances is the piece that put him under the international spotlight. Written for trombone and piano, it quickly became standard for the trombone repertoire and would fit advanced players' skills. The first part, called “Danse Sacrée,” is a slow lyrical melody that is re-used through the piece until the cadenza and the second, “Danse Profane,” has a samba rhythm with a really cheerful end. These two pieces both contain some basics of Jazz. As a pianist, composer, producer and arranger, Jean-Michel Defaye mainly created pieces for brass and wind instruments. He won the Premier Second Grand Prix de Rome in 1958 and the Belgian Queen Elizabeth composition competition in 1959.

Composed in 1956 by Henri Tomasi (1901-1971), French composer, conductor and winner of the Grand Prix de Rome in 1927, this Concerto for Trombone and Orchestra has a strong French signature and lasts 16 minutes. The first movement starts with the trombone and ends with a waltz theme, the second movement is built on an ostinato that makes the trombone sound more lyrical. The third movement is based on the two first ones, with South American rhythms and ends with a virtuosic part played by the trombone.
