Leos Janácek composed his Suite for wind instruments 'Mládí' in 1924, when he was over 70 years old. Numerous sources still survive for this work, making it difficult to establish the definitive musical text. For Henle's Urtext edition - a cooperation with Universal Edition Wien - Jirí Zahrádka from the Janácek-Archiv in Brno succeeded in brilliantly surmounting this difficulty: he consults all of the handwritten sources for the edition for the first time and is thus able to give exact instructions, for instance regarding the numerous tempo variants.

Mexcian-born composer Daniel Catán now resides in the United States. He originally composed Encantamiento for two alto recorders (50484728/$8.95). The composer has made two new versions of this haunting music. Catán has written extensively for the voice, and his lyrical gift is apparent in his instrumental work as well.

Beethoven's Opus 71 is one of a series of works for mixed wind instruments, which he composed in the 1790s. In 1805 at a performance of the dance-like, lively work in Vienna, the audience praised its “lovely melodies” as well as the “wealth of new and surprising ideas.” Five years later Beethoven finally decided to publish the sextet. Our edition follows the musical text in the Beethoven Complete Edition and as usual, provides the original horn part in E flat as well as a transposed part in F. As a little extra it also contains the short March WoO 29, Beethoven's only other composition for two clarinets, horns and bassoons.

Mendelssohn's classic art song, On Wings of Song, set to the poetry to Heinrich Heine, provided the inspiration for the music. The sublime melody has become part of the repertory of musicians of every type--flutists perform the vocal line with the original piano accompaniment, pianists perform Liszt's transcription for solo piano, and violinists play Heifitz's setting for violin and piano. The text of Heine's love poem describes the power of melody to transport a pair of lovers to a magical garden.
