Can a classical pianist also improvise? Play without sheet music or by ear? However much we would like the answer to this question to be “Of course!”, unfortunately, few pianists feel comfortable in this area. Furthermore, we are ashamed that after playing the piano for so many years, we cannot play anything by ear or simply play anything without looking at the sheet music. And there is no reason to be ashamed at all because, after all, if we have never learned any kind of improvisation, we do not have such a skill. I emphasize – a skill, not just ability. [...] Improvisions is a collection of compositions for four hands, in which the primo piano part contains short, improvised passages based on the method created by the author that introduces the practice of improvising. Each passage will include an original melody created by the performer and played with the accompaniment of the secondo piano part. Marta Molodynska-Wheeler, fragment of preface The author intends the collection for people of all ages who want to learn improvisation skills.

From this often-neglected Russian master come these ten beautiful duet studies inspired by nature. They are all highly accessible and suitable for 2nd-3rd year students and above. Highly recommended! Includes complete printed music score with both primo and secondo piano parts, and a compact disc featuring the duets in two formats: split-channel stereo with secondo part on the left channel, primo on the right, so you can play either part; and then again with just the secondo part in stereo so you can perform the primo part alongside.

On Christmas Eve 1950, the Italian Radio broadcast a radio play based on Adalbert Stifter's novella Rock Crystal. The music was written by Nino Rota, the translation was made by Gabriella Benci and Ippolito Pizzetti (the son of the composer Ildebrando Pizzetti, one of Rota's teachers). Here, too, the duo carefully edited the existing piano version. With these two pieces, the piano duet repertoire has taken on a whole new colour, and both performers and listeners can plunge into the atmosphere of Rota's film music. Contents: I Allegretto, con intimo fervore • II Andante con moto • III Andantino • IV Andante immobile • V Allegro • VI Lento, non troppo • VII Allegro • VIII Andantino mosso • IX Mosso e leggero, appena rubato • X Andante sostenuto • XI Allegretto agitato • XII Grandioso • XIII Allegretto.

Igor Stravinsky's masterpiece “Jeu de Cartes” is now one of the standard works in the ballet repertoire and is also played more often as a purely concertante orchestral piece. Richard Rijnvos now transcribed the virtuoso piece for 2 pianos, keeping the individual orchestral parts and octaves precisely to maintain the complexity and expressiveness of the neoclassical original.
