The six pieces in this little suite were written between 1893 and 1896. They were inspired by Hélène Bardac, the daughter of a singer with whom he was friends. The girl was born in 1892 and called “Dolly” on account of her small, delicate figure. The pieces, composed mainly for her birthday or the New Year, reflect the world as experienced by the growing child, from a lullaby to a temperamental dance. But it was not meant to be taken too seriously, as shown by the subtle allusions to his own music and that of others. Despite their simple basic structure these pieces, which soon became popular, contain numerous harmonic and rhythmic subtleties typical of the French composer - “children's music” that is also well suited to adults.
Introduction presented in English, German, and French.

To this day, Brahms' Hungarian Dances number among his most popular works – although he didn't even write them! As he expressly noted on the title page of the first edition, he “only compiled them for piano duet.” What he meant was that he had taken Hungarian dance tunes, fused them into a larger entity and then had the results published, first in an arrangement for piano duet, since the performance of such duets was extremely popular back then. The first two volumes containing the Dances 1-10 were printed in 1869, and two further volumes with the Dances 11-21 were added by Brahms in 1880.

Shortly after a rather unsuccessful performance of his Piano Concerto No. 1, Johannes Brahms wrote to Joseph Joachim in 1859: “... a second one will sound different.” Nevertheless, a good 20 years elapsed before that second concerto finally took form, and only in 1881 was he able to announce: “I wanted to tell you that I have written a very small piano concerto with a tiny little delicate Scherzo.” Henle's piano reduction of this anything-but-little symphonic concerto presents the solo part as it appears in the respective, recently published volume of the Brahms Complete Edition (51486020). Lars Vogt has succeeded in taming the opulent piano writing withis fingerings. The refined arrangement of the complex orchestral part for the accompanying second piano stems from Johannes Umbreit.

Bach's harpsichord concertos have proven extremely popular, though several were originally written as concertos for another solo instrument – either violin or a woodwind instrument. But we know nothing about any such preliminary versions in the case of the A-major Concerto BWV 1055. Its enchantingly songlike middle movement inevitably makes one think of the oboe damore, though there is in fact no reason to suppose that its idiomatic, spirited harpsichord writing was conceived from the outset for anything but a keyboard instrument. Ultimately, this music is so fresh and irresistible that all such speculation is irrelevant. For this Henle Urtext edition of the A-major Concerto, we consulted the autograph score and especially the original orchestral parts that presumably contain the musical text of the concerto as Bach himself performed it. You cant get more authentic than this! The piano reduction contains the solo part with carefully chosen fingerings by Michael Schneidt, plus a piano accompaniment that Johannes Umbreit has arranged so as to be practical and easily playable.

Although Mozart's penultimate piano concerto was completed on 24 February 1788, it was not premiered until 1789 in Dresden. A further performance in autumn 1790, as part of the celebrations in honour of Leopold II's coronation as Emperor, led to the concerto's now popular nickname.
In comparison to the series of large piano concertos from 1784–86, K. 537, with its numerous rapid scale passages and embellishments, looks more conventional at first glance, although it is precisely this more flexible structure that points ahead to forms of the early romantic period. In any case, it today numbers among Mozart's most frequently played concertos. Mozart specialist Andreas Staier has supplemented this Urtext edition with numerous practical performance suggestions (rendered as an ossia or in small print): he provides not only elegant entries, cadenzas, embellishments and fingerings, but also completes the sections of the solo part only fragmentarily preserved in the autograph. Henle thus offers a welcome alternative to the previously known version of the solo part, which contains additions made by the publisher Johann André in the posthumous first edition of 1794.

“After an early mini piece for this instrumentation, Bunte Blätter (Coloured Leaves) is my first real piece for two pianos. It has become a collection of highly diverse and multifaceted pieces and forms, ranging from Walzer (Waltz) to Danse macabre, from 'Fanfare' to 'Zirkusparade (Circus Parade).' The fact that the interpreters of the world premiere, Arthur and Lucas Jussen, are siblings, may and should be felt in the teasingly affectionate 'Fangspiel (Game of Tag)' in which the two pianists sometimes deliberately 'play past' each other. The collection is completed by 'Rätsel (Riddle)' for Peter Sloterdijk's 75th birthday, a small, sphinx-like piece for the librettist of my Babylon opera.”
- Jörg Widmann

It is almost impossible to tell from listening to them that Bach's extremely popular concerti for harpsichord were probably his own transcriptions of solo concerti which had originally been composed for violin or a woodwind instrument. While in many cases the original model is unknown, this is not true in the case of the D major Concerto BWV 1054, which was written in 1738 as an arrangement of the E major Violin Concerto BWV 1042. Once again Bach succeeds in conjuring a brilliant and idiomatic keyboard work from the violin part. Not only because of this, but also principally due to its lively and cheerful outer movements, BWV 1054 belongs among the highlights of Bach's rich compositional output. The piano reduction comprises the solo part together with a very playable piano reduction prepared by Johannes Umbreit for practical use.

In the “Nocturnes” for orchestra and women's chorus, composed between 1897 and 1899, Debussy realised his concept that the musical form should emerge freely from the material. With the tripartite structure, he referenced the symphony, but at the same time distanced himself from it by replacing the motivic-thematic aspects with a variety of nuanced timbres. The movement titles “Nuages” (clouds), “Fêtes” (festivals) and “Sirènes” (sirens), deriving from nature and culture, allude to the programme music that was popular at the time. However, Debussy was not interested in tone-painting, but rather in poetic imagination. The arrangement of such an impressionistic masterpiece for two pianos, which Ravel completed in 1909, was a challenge that the young composer mastered most brilliantly. Together with Louis Aubert, he also gave the successful premiere on 24 April 1911 in the Salle Gaveau in Paris. We were able to enlist Debussy specialist Denis Herlin for the first critical edition of the arrangement, with Andreas Groethuysen contributing the fingerings.
